SHAFT OF LIGHT is debut album by hard rock band from Cambridge, England, United Kingdom, that was formed in 1982. It was released on 5th October 1984. Airrace's brief and unheralded career proves that having friends in high places doesn't always guarantee surefire success. Airrace was essentially handpicked by legendary former Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant to serve as the launching pad for 17-year-old drummer Jason Bonham's career. He was the son of John, of course. Nevertheless, things certainly looked promising when Airrace were matched with in-demand producer Beau Hill to record their 1984 debut, SHAFT OF LIGHT, at New York City's Atlantic Studios. Unfortunately, Hill was so enamored with ‘80s technology that he insisted on polished every last remaining New Wave of British Heavy Metal morsel out of the band's songs, and even ordered Bonham to use electronic drums throughout the sessions. As a result, Airrace's gritty vision, akin to Foreigner's early albums, could only be glimpsed on a few cuts and left the vast remainder sanitized beyond repair, despite the notable vocal chops exhibited by Murrell at all times. Not even he could restore the passion and pulse lost during Airrace's studio domestication. After tumbling off Atlantic's radar in the U.S., SHAFT OF LIGHT vanished from record stores and, seemingly, history itself. In retrospect, though, the album represents an extremely solid, if rare, example of clean-cut British that, while very much dated to the ‘80s, still holds a special place in the hearts of fans of that style.
PERSONNEL: Jim Reid - bass, guitars; Keith Murrell - vocals, backing vocals; Toby Sadler - keyboards, bass, backing vocals; Laurie Mansworth - lead guitars, guitars, backing vocals; Jason Bonham - drums.
From London, Airrace released its stunning debut album back in 1984. Since even listening to this album now, you'll once again struck by the seemingly perfect balance of Hard Rock material, with solid performances by all musicians involved and the crystal clear, powerful vocals of Keith Murrell shining through including a very young Jason Bonham on drums. And the songwriting? Truly exceptional, with every single track being catchy and memorable, especially "First One Over The Line", "Caught In The Game", "I Don't Care", "Not Really Me," "All I'm Asking" and the killer tune "Promise To Call", with a guitar riff and melodic chorus. The band's lack of initial success probably had much to do with timing, with SHAFT OF LIGHT being released just as England's New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement was really picking up steam. It is fourty years since the album saw the light of day. Ehhh... Anyway - the music feels as vital as it did then. And this album with Airrace is undoubtedly one of the best albums from the british scene history. One thing is strange with Airrace and that is that although they used a U.S. producer and also recorded the album in the U.S., it sounds so very British in the sound. It is very difficult to explain, but the British has a different sound than the U.S. and only to the positive in Airrace cases. As far as song material on the disc it is nothing more or less than amazing. Jason Bonham is the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Airrace was the first group Jason headed up. They released one hard driving album in 1984 - SHAFT OF LIGHT. They got back together 2009 for the 25th Anniversary of SHAFT OF LIGHT and did some live shows on festivals. They liked it and decided to make a new album. Back To The Start was released on 1st July 2011 in Europe and 23rd August 2011 in North America.
