ROAD SONGS FOR LOVERS is the twenty-fourth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 29th September 2017 by Jazzee Blue and BMG labels. Rea return to what he’s best known for: an album of gorgeous rock ballads which showcases Rea’s unique voice and a songwriting skill at the top of his game. And it is possibly his finest record to date. ROAD SONGS FOR LOVERS is beautifully nuanced and a record that regularly tugs at the heartstrings and continues Rea’s obsession with travel and motion. Rea’s uniquely warm and distinctive sound is abundantly present and correct throughout the recording and on ''Angel Of Love'' he approaches greatness and you are reminded just how beautiful Rea’s voice can be at times. The song is one of the most moving on ROAD SONGS FOR LOVERS but its heartbreaking nature is not out of place on an album that regularly tugs at the heartstrings. ''Breaking Point'' is a poignant tale of love gone awry, whilst ''Beautiful'' is utterly compelling, piano and sax hugging Rea’s desolate though delicately nuanced vocal delivery. And we defy anyone to not be moved by these sentiments. ROAD SONGS FOR LOVERS proves one thing it is this: you can add beautiful, poignant rock and roll love songs to that pantheon of passions.

Far more successful in Europe than America, based on upwards of two dozen studio albums to his credit, Chris Rea perseveres as the unusually erudite and pragmatic musician that he is with ROAD SONGS FOR LOVERS. This Englishman's first studio album in six years chronicles his impressions of the world inside and outside his own head and heart in a most evocative manner: what begins as personal ultimately becomes universal. All of which is equally vivid in the writing playing and record production on the dozen tracks that comprise the album. But then Rea's always paid close attention to the practical virtues of his albums, so he takes as much pride in his guitar work as his songwriting tasks. As a result, for instance, Chris uses his instrument to skewer the necessary evil of "Money", while he barely hides a snide tone in his vocal. Wielding such multiple means of expression is key to the man's self-assured air. The rough-hewn sound of the man's voice also suits his persona. For this reason alone, what might sound like world-weariness, only sounds like the ruminations of a satisfied mind, right down to the near slow-motion twirl of Rea's slide guitar. And the keyboardist's organ work is as substantive as the rhythm section of bassist James Ahwai and drummer Martin Ditcham. Likewise, Robert Ahwai's rhythm guitar in support of Rea's lead there, becomes the rudder by which the band turns back and forth between stock rock changes and a more delicate melodic framework. The sonics of this album, as applied to the tantalizing guitar solo throughout the album, are a reassuring blend of succor and salve for body, mind and soul.
