POWERHOUSE is a compilation album by Deep Purple, featuring previously unreleased live and studio tracks from the band's Mark II line-up at the height of its powers. The album was released on 9th November 1977 and achieved Gold Certification in Japan. The late 70s witnessed a slew of mediocre Deep Purple releases, which, though they served only to exploit the band's influential legacy to the point of exhaustion, kept their memory alive long enough to spur their eventual reunion in 1984. Originally released in continental Europe and Japan, 1977's POWERHOUSE is a perfect example. Four mostly unnecessary live performances are book-ended by two rare B-sides, "Painted Horse" and "Cry Free," both of which are now available in the Shades box set.

POWERHOUSE is an album of unreleased songs and rarities, mostly live (minus two tracks, which are studio outtakes), released in 1977, when Deep Purple were already disbanded. The couple of studio outtakes are "Painted Horse", a blues rocker with Ian Gillan on harmonica, and the excellent "Cry Free", recorded in 1970, with outstanding drumming and guitars by Ian Paice and Ritchie "Man In Black" Blackmore along with Ian Gillan's high-pitched reverberations, a song that could be perfectly deemed heavy metal for its time. The core of the record consists of three live numbers, recorded in 1969, the same day of the famous Concerto For Group And Orchestra, "Hush", "Wring That Neck", and a memorable version of "Child In Time" which made the conservative audience of the Royal Albert Hall applaud, politely. The CD also includes one ignited outtake from the legendary Made In Japan: "Black Night". Such an obscure, elusive little album POWERHOUSE is, though it's including certain gems that the Purple aficionado won't want to miss.
