Duane Allman- AN ANTHOLOGY- 2CD- 1972/2008- Not On Label- No UPC- 150 grn
AN ANTHOLOGY is a compilation of recordings featuring guitarist Duane Allman. The double album consists of a selection of songs by various artists that Allman contributed to as a session musician, along with early recordings by his band the Hourglass and his partial-namesake group, the Allman Brothers Band. The album also features rare solo work by the guitarist. It was released in November 1972. While his recording career only lasted a little more than six years ('66-'71), Duane Allman's playing was heard not only with The Allman Brothers Band, but on a variety of important records by other artists as well. Hence this posthumous 1972 double-album collection, which includes many memorable solos by the distinctive slide guitarist from sessions at the fabled Fame and Muscle Shoals studios. Duane Allman‘s greatness was apparent on his recordings with The Allman Brothers Band, yet there was another side to the superb guitarist. For many years, he was a highly respected session musician, playing on cuts by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie, and Clarence Carter, among others. By including those session cuts, as well as a sampling of his brief sojourn in Eric Clapton‘s Derek And The Dominoes and a few rare solo tracks, along with a number of representative Allman Brothers songs, the double-album AN ANTHOLOGY winds up drawing a complete portrait of Duane Allman. Duane Allman who died at a mere 24 years old and only got to release two full studio albums and the world's greatest live release with his primary band. So in terms of actually hearing Duane play on different songs, this AN ANTHOLOGY is a serious boon. Imagine how much more it was back in '72 before the archival floodgates opened. Oh and also, this is mostly pretty incredible music. But in terms of being a great service to SKYDOG's legacy, the value comes from hearing him in so many fresh contexts. Scattered across the two CD we get to hear formative Duane. We get to hear Duane tearing into extended blues soloing. We get his immortal, life-affirming playing on "Layla". But the greatest joys & revelations come from the songs where he's not out front in screaming lead-guitar rock-god mode, which is of course the role that made him justly famous. We see that in something like the country-tinged Delaney, Bonnie And Friends selection, and we especially hear it in Duane's perfect contributions to a variety of black R&B and Blues players' music. The core of the collection is stuff like Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude" cover, Aretha's barnstorming take on "The Weight", and the sublime King Curtis instrumental version of "Games People Play". Duane is in pure support mode on at least half of the songs here, and yet each and every time he elevates the tracks without overstepping his bounds or outshining the primary artists. Hearing that kind of respectful, clever restraint by a guy who we know could so easily, masterfully go nuclear with his own band reveals a killer new facet of our favorite slide guitar wunderkind and paints a picture of an egoless, genuine music lover and collaborator par excellence. The existence of this compilation is a fantastic service to both Duane Allman's legacy and to his fans.
