MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE is a studio album by former Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Trapeze vocalist/ bassist Glenn Hughes. It was his eleventh solo studio album and was released on 9th June 2006 on Frontiers Records, Demolition, Sony BMG and Yamaha records. The album contains a more varied approach than his previous albums. Some songs follow Hughes' regular style of funk infused hard rock, but other songs are mellower and lean towards acoustic songwriting. There is a heavy use of acoustic guitar on many of the tracks as well as some orchestration. This is the second Hughes album to feature Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The record was also co-produced by Smith and was recorded at his home in the Hollywood Hills. The album features Hughes' regular guitarist JJ Marsh, who co-wrote the majority of the songs with Hughes. Other performances come from South African composer Mark Kilian who arranged the string sections and played keyboards and Chad Smith's Red Hot Chili Peppers' bandmate John Frusciante, who plays guitar on two tracks. The European version of the album includes a cover of The Moody Blues song "Nights In White Satin", featuring John Frusciante. This was originally featured on the soundtrack for the 2005 film Stealth. The version on MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE is a slightly different mix. You can’t spell “funky” without the word “fun”, and that’s what MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE sounds like. These guys obviously had a hell of a time recording these songs, and it shows. No label pressures, no commercial expectations, just a bunch of talented musicians getting together and jamming without a care. This looseness shows in the inspired performances of these grooves, making MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE as much fun to listen to as it probably was to make.

Glenn Hughes has always seemed to surround himself with the greatest guitarists and drummers of rock, including Ritchie Blackmore, Tommy Bolin, Ian Paice, Tony Iommi, and Kenny Aronoff. And on his 2006 solo outing, MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE, the string of strong supporting players remains intact. Hughes is joined by of current Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith. Hughes had hooked up with drummer Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers for Soul Mover, and the two found an immediate kinship and chemistry in the way that the best bass players and drummers do. With J.J. Marsh on six-string and keyboardist Ed Roth, the four created a great musical dynamic for the songs on Soul Mover. The guys must have enjoyed the experience, because Hughes, Marsh and Smith reconvened in Smith’s Hollywood Hills home to record MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE. Music certainly has a funkier edge than, say, the last few releases Hughes has collaborated on with Iommi, but this should certainly not come as a surprise to longtime fans. Arguably, he has not played alongside musicians as fluent with the funk as his fellow travelers here, especially on the leadoff single, "The Valiant Denial", which rocks and slithers the way only a Peppers groove can. The funk continues on such selections as "Monkey Man", but just when you think you have it all figured out, Hughes and company hand in a surprise reading of, um, "Nights In White Satin". All in all, MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE is another fine release from one of rock's great and criminally underrated voices. Hughes’ 2005 album Soul Mover was a career high among a lifetime scattered with such, but even Hughes has outdone himself with MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE. Play it LOUD!
