Gov't Mule (pronounced "Government Mule") is an American Southern rock jam band, formed in 1994 as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody. Fans often refer to Gov't Mule simply as Mule. The band released their debut album, Gov't Mule, in 1995, and have since released an additional nine studio albums, plus numerous EPs and live releases. Gov't Mule has become a staple act at music festivals across North America, with both its members and frequent guests from other notable bands adding various funk and blues rock elements to the band's sound. 12 songs on 2 discs lasting 115 minutesd. Makes a pretty fine intro to the band for even the fickle fan, esp. that 2nd disc. But if you have Live: With A Littlle Help From Our Friends, you won't much need this album, unless you're into the nuances of different live performances of the same songs. Single-worthy songs are "Thorazine Shuffle" (studio from "Dose") and "No Need To Suffer" (live). The rest is some pretty decent live material, esp. the 13-minute "Gambler's Dream". It's a compelling enough album to grasp what the big deal is about with this excellent band, esp. Warren Haynes. Encore!

Disc One features eight tracks taken from the albums Dose, Life Before Insanity and Live: ''With A Little Help From My Friends (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2)''. Disc Two contains four rare and hard to find tracks: ''Gambler's Roll'', ''32-20 Blues'', ''Third Stone From The Sun'' and ''I Shall Return''. Totally essential compilation for any good fan of the Mule. When you come across a Best Of from a group, of which you also have all their records, you don't even bother to look at it... I have everything, why do I want a Best of?......Error !!!!! Warren doesn't knit without yarn...he's a genius...even for making a simple. The Best Of ..... Not having this album will deprive you of having little jewels that are almost impossible to get. They are two albums with some of his best songs, both in studio and live. The second is live, but a very difficult (... and very expensive) Live to get: With A Little Help From Our Friends.... a gem that you can't get even if you want to... plus the version ''Wandering Child'' from disc one, also from this edition. Trio format from the beginning with Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Matt Abts on drums and the great and long-awaited Allen Woody on bass. Fabulous double album.... and if you don't have it... well.... you miss it.
