Hammer Of The Gods- TWO NIGHTS IN NORTH AMERICA- 2CD- 2006- MP4 Productions- 837101138925- 200 grn
OFFICIAL BOOTLEG.
TWO NIGHTS IN NORTH AMERICA is double live albun by Mike Portnoy's all-star tribute to Led Zeppelin recorded in NYC and Montreal. It was released on 8th August 2006. Drummer Mike Portnoy has always liked paying tribute to his idols. Alongside his former Dream Theater bandmates, he performed legendary albums such as Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, Deep Purple's Made In Japan, Metallica's Master Of Puppets and Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast. Not to mention the various covers they recorded during their career. Not content with that, the musician went further and created cover bands to pay homage to some of his heroes. One of them was Hammer Of The Gods. Famous for his double bass drum technique and his cracked time breaks, the musician impresses by keeping the arrangements very faithful to the original group. He didn't turn the songs into prog metal songs. On the contrary, he kept the essence intact. More than that, there was also a concern in trying to reproduce the look of the original quartet. They tryed to maintain the spirit of Zeppelin's performances. Without a doubt, a beautiful tribute. There are no beginners here. All the musicians are renowned artists of the highest level. Completing the team: guitarist Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X), bassist Dave La Rue (Joe Satriani, Dixie Dregs) and singer Daniel Gildenlöw (Stream Of Passion). Recorded over two nights, the musicians don't have to stop performing hits. You won't hear familiar classics like “Rock 'N' Roll”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “All My Love”, “Dy´er Maker”, “Stairway To Heaven”. Not even “Communication Breakdown”. There is one or another big hit, but it is not the highlight of the show.

CD2 - ONE NIGHT IN NEW YORK CITY.

In a dream team like this, don't need to say that the instrumental is well executed. However, Led Zeppelin has complex material not only to play, but also to sing. And that's where things get a little complicated. Daniel is not a bad singer, he has a timbre very similar to Robert Plant, but there are some songs that are too loud for him and some falsettos are a little lacking in the second performance. At the Montreal show, he impresses. In the New York performance, in songs like “Out On The Tiles” and “The Wanton Song” it is outstanding. Without a doubt, his performance is respectable. But the best guy to covered Zeppelin is still Great White's Jack Russell. As for the band, the only song that they shouldn't have recorded is “Black Dog”. It leaves that feeling of ‘'something missing'’ in shows where the musicians were, until then, impeccable. Furthermore, everything is here intact. Spliced songs, improvisations, long drum solo in “Moby Dick”, long guitar solo in “Dazed And Confused”. Everything a Zeppelin fan likes to hear is present. Of the four cover projects you heard from Portnoy, this is certainly the one that impressed the most. It's a collector's item for Dream Theater fans!
