Jeff Scott Soto- PRISM- CD- 2002- Frontiers Records/CD-Maximum Ltd.- No UPC- 150 grn
PRISM is a second studio album by American rock singer of Puerto Rican descent Jeff Scott Soto. It was released on 4th December 2002. It is important to note that Jeff verifies fans' initial suspicions that PRISM comprised of songs the singer had collected over the years. Indeed the album opens on the outstanding melodic rocker "Eyes Of Love" but develops into an unexpectedly diverse collection bringing to font elements of funk, blues and soul music which, despite the rocking production, do not perfectly fit in the melodic rock genre. Regardless of the above, PRISM remains a landmark in the new millennium as well as a bright classic. This man has been around for many years now and has sang on albums with acts like Axel Rudi Pell, Talisman, Takara, Eyes, Humanimal, Yngwie Malmsteen and many more. His first solo album Love Parade was released back in 1994 but was more of a groovy rock album mixed with funk and it was a big disappointment. This time he´s back to his melodic rock roots and this reminds very much of Takara and Eyes at their best. He has written all the songs by himself except for a cover he sings a duet with Glenn Hughes called "I Want To Take You Higher".

PRISM is a great mixture of rockers and ballads where Jeff sings with emotion and power. The album opens up with the best song of the album called "Eyes Of Love". This is a fantastic song with a chorus that reminds of both Takara and Eyes. "Don’t Come Easy" starts off very slow and acoustic but turns into a great mid-tempo song that is a mixture of Tyketto, Eyes and put in some traces of Talisman. The song has good background vocals. The pianoballad "Don’t Wanna Say Goodbye" could have come from the Eyes debut. Jeff shows his best side here and what an incredible singer he is. "Holding On" is Takara all the way with just better production and the keyboards are brilliant. PRISM is a great melodic rock album that will please fans of Jeff Scott Soto, Takara and Eyes for sure. You also get a promotional video for the song "Eyes Of Love" as bonus on this album. PRISM is a album cramfull of soulful ballads and trippy guitar-driven tracks. All compositions made according the genre's low. It means that the album features many-voices choruses, massive guitar solos, mellifluous melodies in galore here. What's more interesting for you, there is an attempt does something really exciting that rise above the usual level, it's the track ''I Want To Take You Higher'' with the blues rock flair. In general, PRISM is not half as bad stuff, especially slow-driving numbers. Jeff Scott Soto know how good hard rock supposed to sound about. Basically, this is the first true album for Jeff and he found his his musical way. Great compositions and a very good album loaded with slow songs, where Jeff's voice trully shines. Many memorable songs and thrill guaranteed for all good music lovers. A very talented musician that should be in every melodic rock lovers collection.
