L.A. BLUES AUTHORITY VOLUME II: GLENN HUGHES - BLUES is a solo album by former Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Trapeze vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes. The album was produced under the moniker of the L.A. Blues Authority, a blues project that featured many musicians playing original blues tracks and covers. This is the only album under that name which featured only original material performed by one singer. The album was recorded in three weeks and Hughes' claims the themes in the record deal with his personal demons of the time. This was Hughes' first solo album to be released after he kicked his drug habits in 1991 and found his ''higher power''. He hadn't released an album under his own name since 1977's Play Me Out. This marked a beginning of a highly productive period in Hughes' life that still continues. This record really not as bad as some may convey. This was Glenn's resurgence back into the fold in 92,with most of his following studio efforts only getting better. A Christian theme in the words of Glenn Hughes after his "seeing the light" post addiction problem's. Hughes and his gang of big haired friends make the most of this album, and Hughes actually sounds right on for most of it. Glenn Hughes never associated with blues music. After years of problems Glenn was invited to record this CD. As many fans had often asked for Glenn to do a blues album he went for it. The result is spot on. Glenn wrote or co-wrote every song, mostly telling the stories of recent changes in his life. This is the first blues album that you can keep going back to without getting bored. Plenty of variety to maintain the listeners interest.
PERSONNEL: Glenn Hughes – vocals, bass; Craig Erickson – all rhythm guitars, lead guitar; Tony Franklin – bass; Gary Ferguson – drums; Mark Jordan – keyboards; Mick Mars, Paul Pesco, Darren Housholder, Richie Kotzen, Mark Kendall, Warren DeMartini, John Norum – guitars.
Glenn "The Voice Of Rock" Hughes was contacted by Shrapnel Records main man, in September of 1992, regarding Hughes possible interest in recording a blues album. Hughes had been approached previously regarding such work, but never moved on the various offers. In 1992, the time was right and Hughes subsequently contacted a number of friends to assist on the project. Hughes immediately went to work writing songs, which he took to the studio in October of '92. The album features a number of songs penned by Hughes/Erickson with the occassional co-credit from their fellow band members. The line up that features on this record would make any rock and metal fan drool from the mouth on first glance, and rightfully so. Hughes was backed in the studio on the twelve original tracks that make up BLUES, by numerous hot shot guitarists. Hughes, along with Tony Franklin handled the bass work, while drummer Gary Ferguson laid down the back beat on each song. Obviously the main draw on BLUES is the incredible pipes of Hughes. That being said, the stellar guitar work on offer is also a primary draw. The BLUES disc is hardly a full-on blues effort, as Hughes and crew lean into rock and funk throughout the album. The main blues numbers served up, "What Can I Do For Ya?" and "So Much Love To Give", are inspired tracks and provide the true spirit of this disc. BLUES reinvigorated Glenn Hughes and prompted the man with the golden throat to begin a major rebirth in his recording career. Welcome back Glenn!
