Popa Chubby Featuring Galea- FLASHED BACK- CD- 2001- Grammy Records- No UPC- 100 grn
Songs From The '60s, Blues And Beyond.
Very good Popa Chubby album. A bit different for him, as it is not all-blues, all the time. Every song is a well-known nugget from the 60's. Another point of difference is that Popa utilizes organ, horns, and background singers throughout the album. Excellent guitar solos, as always. Don't let that stop you from purchasing this one!!!
PERSONNEL: Popa Chubby (Vocals, Guitar); Larry Crockett (Drums); Kris Jefferson (Bass); Mike Lattrell, George Papageorge (Hammond Organ); Galea (Vocals).
Vocals, guitars, bass, drums, occasionally a piano or a Hammond or harmonica, that's it for the instrumentation. Almost a really classic live performance, just in the studio. During the recording, however, a lot of value was obviously placed on playing as many takes as unadulterated and directly as possible, namely within the framework of the entire band. This reveals the finest details, which, however, make up the very special charm and appeal of these recordings. For example, you can clearly hear the cymbals and snare drums clattering in the background when solo guitars or riffs and bass lines are largely the focus. So nothing was embellished and filtered out here, but left exactly as a band sounds as a whole. A guitar or bass amplifier can also hum and crack. That's what these things do, and not so discreetly and quietly. But you can only have this experience if you have already experienced such parts live. On most recordings, noise gates, compressors and limiters, and in the worst case the sound engineer on the PC, ensure that all these subtleties are simply no longer audible on the master tape. But what these often neglected subtleties can actually do for the liveliness and authenticity of a recording can be experienced, for example, in "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", right at the striking bass intro. A title in general that, alongside "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" or "Gloria", is one of the highlights of this album. And then there's a track by a musician whose reinterpretation is usually considered pure and simple sacrilege, because there are very, very few that even come close to the genius of the original performer, let alone reach that level. Popa Chubby can do it, as he proves with track no. 6 on this album - "Hey Joe" by Billy Roberts, known of course for the interpretation of the divine Jimi Hendrix. Nothing more needs to be said at this point, except that, in our opinion, this album simply shouldn't be missing in any collection. Popa Chubby shows himself here as a brilliant interpreter of well-known classics from the 60s. Together with Kris Jefferson on bass, Mike Lattrell on piano or the Hammond, Galea supporting on the vocal parts and Larry "Mr. Sticks" Crocket on the drums, the New Yorker delivers an album here that will make it difficult for any blues and rock fan to sit really calm and relaxed on the couch. The only conclusion left is to say: it really blows!
