METAMORPHOSIS is the fourth studio album by Iron Butterfly, released on August 13, 1970. Mike Pinera and Larry "El Rhino" Reinhardt became members of Iron Butterfly in the early part of 1970. "...about as subtle as a club, with orgasmic vocals falling into roars and grunts, and a rhythmic emphasis that's like a punch in the nose..." On Ball, Iron Butterfly began to expand their sound, attempting to write more concisely. On METAMORPHOSIS, the group continued their musical explorations, adding a layered production to their sound. However, only keyboardist/vocalist Doug Ingle was enthusiastic about the band's new musical direction and most of the group refused to participate in the recording of the album, claiming it strayed too far from Iron Butterfly's signature sound. The truth of the matter is the rest of the band was right - under Ingle's direction, the group tries stylistic diversions that they do not have the ability to accomplish, including funk and acoustic ballads. Nevertheless, this ambition makes for an interesting listen, since Iron Butterfly's albums can be weighed down by their relentless heaviness. Despite a handful of strong tracks [particularly the single "Easy Rider (Let The Wind Pay The Way)"] most of the album doesn't hold up on repeated plays.

Iron Butterfly were a psych band famous for their 17-minute “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, which many claim to be where metal got its roots. This is their final album with the lineup they’re known for & wouldn’t release another album until 1975. They ended on a far better note, this is far less mediocre than their other albums. While it still isn’t great, it’s listenable & even has a couple genuinely good songs. The biggest improvement comes with the compositions, they’re far more engaging/interesting than they’ve been in the past. There’s a better sense of rhythm & direction here, not sounding like a collection of completely aimless songs that have no center point (aside from one). Not only that, the production value is WAY higher: the organ doesn’t pierce through everything, the guitar sounds pretty solid & the vocals have slightly more polish to them, making Doug Ingle tolerable (somehow). It took them 3 albums, but they finally made something semi-quality. This does suffer some big pitfalls though: ''Soldier in our Town”, an organ-led slow-burner that isn’t terrible on the surface… until Ingle’s strained, overdramatic vocals come in, ruining any subtlety this had; ”Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)” - again, Ingle’s vocals are a major issue. They don’t line up with the instrumentals at all, he does what he wants & it sounds amateur. The guitar playing is pretty lackluster too; ”Butterfly Bleu” - a 14-minute long song that has multiple movements… that don’t fit together. It’s a mashup of like 4 different ideas into one song & it doesn’t go over well, especially with the experimental vocal segment on the back end. Overall, consider this their best album but that isn’t saying much. While the upbeat energy of “Best Years Of Our Life”, the subtle acoustic-led “Slower Than Guns” and the surprisingly catchy “Stone Believer” make this record stand out above their others, the collection of bad songs take this from potentially being solid back down to mediocrity.
