Wake up your neighbors with this collection of the group's "heaviest" sides from their late '60s/early '70s heyday! LIGHT AND HEAVY: The Best Of Iron Butterfly is a greatest hits compilation released by Iron Butterfly in January 19, 1993. It contains most of their studio recordings from 1967 to 1970, including 21 of their 33 studio album tracks from that period. Although the compilation is quite generous, featuring 21 tracks on CD, LIGHT AND HEAVY: The Best Of Iron Butterfly isn't all that entertaining, due to Iron Butterfly's difficulties with producing compelling material. All of the group's highlights from 1967-1970 are included, although the career-making, 17-minute "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is presented in its three-minute single edit. Since that is the only Iron Butterfly song most listeners know, the lack of the full-length version could potentially sink the album, but the fact of the matter is, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" gets quite repetitive over the course of nearly 20 minutes. While the quality of the rest of LIGHT AND HEAVY is spotty [ranging from heavy psychedelic rock to light psychedelic pop] it is a more intriguing listen than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, even if it doesn't have the period-piece charm of the original hit record.

California acid rockers Iron Butterfly are largely known for the instrumental “Iron Butterfly Theme” and the 17-minute side-long track “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” which epitomized progressive late-'60s FM radio, where extended jams were favored over their “pop” counterparts. On this extensive collection of the group’s studio work from 1967-1970, the under-three-minute AM radio “single” version of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” makes the cut, along with album tracks from the band’s first album, Heavy (which featured a different lineup than subsequent albums), and the following three albums. Perversely, every song from the In–A-Gadda-Da-Vida album is chosen except the excellent “Are You Happy.” However, remaining highlights from the albums Ball and the underrated Metamorphosis (with guitarists Mike Pinera and Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt) fill out the selections, with “I Can’t Help But Deceive You Little Girl” being the sought-out hard-to-find single. For anyone unfamiliar with the group, this “best of” provides a decent overview. However, established fans will likely prefer to own each of the band’s four albums, since Iron Butterfly were always more of an album-rock band.
