Tom Fogerty was born 9 November 1941, Berkeley, California, USA, died 6 September 1990, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. A self-taught musician, this artist’s career flourished upon joining a Rock ‘n’ Roll band founded by his younger brother, John Fogerty. Having completed their lone single, ‘Bonita’, in 1963, Tom Fogerty And The Blue Velvets secured a recording contract with Fantasy Records, but were persuaded to change their name to the Golliwogs in an effort to capitalize on the concurrent British beat boom. The group kept this detested appellation until 1967 when they became known as Creedence Clearwater Revival. As such they were one of the most successful groups of the era, but relationships between the siblings soured and in February 1971, Tom Fogerty left for a solo career. He initially participated in an informal group which included guitarist Jerry Garcia and organist Merl Saunders, before completing four albums which, if inconsistent, contained several excellent tracks. Fogerty then formed a new act, Ruby, around Randy Oda (guitar/keyboards), Anthony Davis (bass) and Bobby Cochran (drums). The group recorded three albums, the last of which, Precious Gems, was preceded by Fogerty’s final solo set, Deal It Out. Fogerty worked in real estate before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona during the mid-80s, apparently planning to write an account of the Creedence story. However, he died prematurely of respiratory failure following tuberculosis in 1990.
Tom's album SIDEKICKS. This is his last one... It's not the best and is getting away from the Creedence style that attracted us all in the first place. Falling somewhere between "Deal it out"(1981) and the two "Ruby" albums (1977/78)the link is Randy Oda... not a deodorant, but the multi instrumentalist who lifted Tom's style onto a completely new level when he formed the band Ruby with him. We couldn't be much further from CCR with drum sequencing and other electronic gadgets. The constructions are perfect except they lack the organics of personality! It's all too smooth and the songs are not strong. Best track is probably a remake of the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B"- but who needs it?
"Clearwater Rain", an instrumental, is pleasant but has nothing to do with any Creedence precipitation. There is one song which stays with you though, because of the hummable (and whistled by Tom) chorus: "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (was this ever intended for the film of the same name?) nags away and guarantee that you too will be whistling or humming that repetitive chorus long after the CD is finished. So this then, seems to be Tom's final offering. Released, posthumously. You need it to complete your collection...but it will be to "Zephyr National and "Myopia" you will return. If you want something of Tom Fogerty's music but don't know what to choose then go for the one CD issue of these.
