DEFINITIVE COLLECTION: 2 CDs Of Digitally Remastered Hits!
Universal's GOLD Series.
GOLD is a double compilation album by Rod Stewart released by Mercury Records in September 12, 2005. This 2-CD set takes you from the earliest solo cuts to the breakthrough '70s hits of Rod Stewart! No one had rolled folk, blues, soul and rock into a sound like this: ''Maggie May''; ''(I Know) I'm Losing You''; ''Handbags And Gladrags''; ''Reason To Believe''; ''Angel''; ''You Wear It Well''; ''Twisting The Night Away''; ''Oh! No Not My Baby''; ''Mine For Me''; ''Gasoline Alley''; ''Mandolin Wind'', and more. Rod Stewart built much of his career on bold, distinctive cover tunes, a point driven home by 2005's two-disc GOLD collection, which showcases Stewart's interpretive skills during his initial solo years of 1969-1974. More than half of the tracks here are penned by some of the finest pop/rock songwriters of the time, including Bob Dylan (the spare, somber "Only A Hobo" and the lilting "Tomorrow Is A Long Time"), Paul McCartney (the steel-drum-enhanced "Mine For Me"), Elton John & Bernie Taupin (the nostalgic "Country Comforts" and the rollicking "Let Me Be Your Car," the latter featuring John himself), and Tim Hardin (the timelessly soulful "[Find A] Reason to Believe"). During this time, Stewart became an excellent songwriter in his own right, penning (or co-penning) a number of tunes here, including the transcendent "Maggie May" and the surging "Every Picture Tells A Story." More extensive than 1976's The Best Of Rod Stewart and slightly outshining '92's The Mercury Anthology, GOLD is ideal for anyone seeking a thorough sampler of Stewart's early solo work.

Mercury/Chronicles' 2005 double-disc set GOLD expands and rejiggers the previous best Rod Stewart double-disc set, 1992's Mercury Anthology. This 35-track compilation contains all but five of the songs from that 32-track compilation - the live cuts with the Faces have been cut out - in nearly the same sequencing. So, anybody who already has that set, or already has the great 2002 triple-disc set Reason To Believe: The Complete Mercury Recordings, doesn't need to get this, since there's nothing new here. However, anybody who wants an enormously entertaining, comprehensive overview of Stewart at his solo peak should get this, since it has all of the very greatest moments from his first four albums - in fact, all of Every Picture Tells A Story is here, although the second side of the LP concludes the first disc here, with the first side of the LP opening the second disc - at a very reasonable price.
