The sheer number of high-profile rock bands that named themselves after his songs, covered his songs, and, unfortunately, often stole his music, makes it clear what a key position McKinley "Muddy Waters" Morganfield, born (presumably) in Mississippi in 1913, holds in music history. Like no other, he stands for the transformation of blues to rock; his early recordings and later record releases form a centerpiece of postwar blues. There is no way around this music. The first 24-bit remastering of any of Muddy's late career work is of considerable interest. The fact that, in the wake of the earlier best-of disc, there's enough material to do another 60-minute-plus collection, also speaks well for this catalog. The clarity of the Super Bit Mapping audio brings out a sharpness in these recordings that the original vinyl and CD issues barely hinted at. The stuff is finally mastered at the volume it always should have been (this is a potential lease-breaker) and more than justifies the purchase. The music viscerally exciting as Muddy's work for Chess -- he's slower, starts at a lower energy level, and takes his time building up intensity, but the climaxes are majestic. The playing is also as solid as ever, and Muddy still had a considerable amount to say musically. GOLD still has the edge for songs, although the producers here have wisely included Muddy's covers of songs that he liked by John Lee (Sonny Boy) Williamson, Arthur Crudup, and Big Joe Williams, in addition to some of his own tunes. Muddy Waters is rightly synonymous with the blues, the music that made its reputation. Southern migrants like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and others helped to shape electric blues/rhythm & blues and what would become rock & roll in the early 1950s with the unprecedented force and sheer unalloyed soul of their work. Muddy was the first of these bona fide legends to record back in the late 40s, and this 50-track collection spans his whole career. It features influential classics, powerful rarities and enough certified blues standards to keep the Stones in business for their next three albums. 2CD set with comprehensive booklet featuring authoritative notes and rare photos.
