Thin Lizzy were a hard rock band (with soul, blues and Irish folk influences) from Dublin (Ireland) with a hard-rock style whose career began in the 1970s. Fronted by main songwriter, singer and bassist Phil Lynott ( mulatto, something unusual in Irish bands of the time), founder together with drummer Brian Downey. Later the guitarist Eric Bell was added, which lasted until 1973 until he was temporarily replaced by Gary Moore (he would return years later for another brief period) and later for more years by the Scotsman Brian Robertson and the American Scot Gorham. Initially Thin Lizzy's sales were modest, until in 1976 they embraced success with Jailbreak and became known on both sides of the Atlantic. In the year 1978 Robertson would march, entering a convulsive era of new guitarists. At the same time, Lynott got involved in other projects and published a solo album. Phil, due to serious drug problems, died in 1986 from pneumonia and heart problems, although the band's trajectory was already erratic by then. John Sykes, the last guitarist, reactivated the band, mainly to offer concerts, although that is another story. GREATEST HITS brings together 36 songs on two CDs (hits and lesser known, not in chronological order) such as ''Sarah'', ''Whiskey In The Jar'' (traditional Irish theme), ''Showdown'', ''Wild One'', ''The Boys Are Back In Town'', ''Bad Reputation'', ''Black Rose'' and ''The Sun Goes Down'' or ''Hollywood (Down on Your Luck)'' live, as well as some of Lynnot's ''Out In The Fields'' (with Gary Moore). Thin Lizzy have been influential in hard-rock and heavy metal and have their point when they mix rock with Celtic music.

Thin Lizzy is unquestionably one of the true icons of British rock. Nobody has ever sounded like them, yet they have influenced countless others. Phil Lynott's poetic lyricism, the unmatchable dual guitar precision and peerless melodies, all of this is part of the Lizzy heritage and what they have left behind is powerful and influential. The band formed as a three-piece in Dublin and 1970 but it was their 1976 album Jailbreak proved to be the moment that Thin Lizzy arrived on the world stage as an unstoppable force. In 1978, the band released Live And Dangerous, which is rightly regarded as one of the all-time great live albums. The band finally called it a day in 1983, with their final British performance being a headlining slot at the Reading Festival that August. On January 4, 1986, Lynott tragically died at the age of 36 but left behind a catalogue of songs that stands head and shoulders above any of his peers. This Greatest Hits 2CD set brings together all the band’s hits and live favourites on vinyl for the first time in a non-limited edition form. Lizzy Expert Nick Sharp has overseen the tracklisting, which is all killer, no filler and pure unadulterated Thin Lizzy.
