BEST OF B.T.O. is a compilation album by Bachman-Turner Overdrive that contains material from their first five studio albums. A remastered version was released in 1998, titled BEST OF B.T.O. (REMASTERED HITS), which added the tracks "Four Wheel Drive", "Free Wheelin'", and "Down To The Line". The European issue added another six tracks. All songs were also full-length album versions, though in the U.S. the single edit of "Let It Ride" was used. BEST OF B.T.O. (REMASTERED HITS) is essentially a remastered version of the 1976 compilation Best Of B.T.O. (So Far), augmented by three bonus tracks, which was previously only available as a single. The sound is better than on the initial issue, and the album remains an effective summary of BTO's career, the perfect choice for anyone looking for just one album from the hard-rocking Canadians. In spite of the collection's optimistic title, this bombastic Canadian quartet had a relatively short shelf life, even by seventies rock standards. C.F. Turner's John-Fogerty-on-steroids howl revved up the meatiest numbers ''Let It Ride'' and ''Roll On Down The Highway'', even tho' ex Guess Who axe man Randy Bachman's ''Takin' Care Of Business'' and ''You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet'' got tons more airplay and endless TV and movie exposure during the group's afterlife. Their final hit ''Hey You'', rumored to be a poke at Bachman's former band mate Burton Cummings, was a blatant retread of all the other biggies, while ''Blue Collar'' and ''Lookin' Out For Number One'' were intricately rendered jazz-stroked alternatives to BTO's trademark cock-rock riffage. Umpteen-gazillion B.T.O. comps have flooded the market over the decades, but none ever trumped this first one...and you can bet yer fat stack of 18-tracks on that, bubba!

This nine-song collection released in 1976 was the first of close to two dozen "Best Of," "Greatest Hits," and "Greatest Hits Live" collections by the Guess Who's major competition when Randy Bachman left that venerable Canadian band. "Roll On Down The Highway" has a great riff, a sparkling neo-Led Zeppelin vamp, mutating "Black Dog" somewhat, slowed up and made commercial and it's the biggest hit they had that was not written by Randy Bachman. "Hey You," a reworking of the "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" chord changes and perhaps a dig at Burton Cummings in the same way that Lennon gave "How Do You Sleep?" to McCartney, clocks in at five seconds less than "Roll On Down The Highway," and is as equally forgotten years later, classics hits radio stations opting for B.T.O.'s first three hits for the narrow rotation that is that format. These songs are culled from the group's first five albums, 1973's Bachman Turner Overdrive debut up to 1975's Head On. They ruled the charts as a North American counterpart to the British Bad Company, whose first version charted during the same time period with almost the same amount of hits. Five of the nine songs were composed all or in part by Randy Bachman, including the song that didn't break the Top 40 but should have, "Looking Out For #1." Its "Girl From Ipanema" riff and majestic performance was touted by Mercury in the trades as their next number one, but for some inexplicable reason, it fizzled. This album has been re-mastered and refined over the years, but it is what it is, a compact collection of their hits released over a two-year period.
