STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING is the fifth album by American jam band Blues Traveler. It was released in July 1, 1997. The title of the album, and the accompanying cover art, are from the directions to Neverland, as given by Peter Pan in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan (1904/1911): "Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning." It is the last of the band's albums to feature bassist Bobby Sheehan, who died of a drug overdose in 1999. These New York workhorses doesn't stray any perceptible distance from their patented, John Popper-blowing blues-rock formula. "Carolina Blues" is a tasty lead single, while "Justify The Thrill," "Great Big World," and "I Dreamed About You Last Night" seem like choice followups. There's even a love song called "Canadian Rose" complete with fond references to Vancouver and, of all unlikely places, Burlington. As an invitation to musical adventure, Blues Traveler have never offered better than “Great Big World”. While the tune retains the trademark blasts of John Popper’s nuclear-strength harmonica, the hardedged riffing of guitarist Chan Kinchla and the rhythmic limberness of drummer Brendan Hill and bassist Bob Sheehan, such high-powered musicianship supports the sort of melodic momentum that’ll grab the ears of those more interested in songs than jams. It’s a great big world, calling you to take a ride.

The commercial success of Four was a mixed blessing for Blues Traveler. It did give them a wider audience, but it also put them in the delicate position of pleasing their new fans while retaining their hardcore, jam-oriented cult following. They skillfully manage to do just that on STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING, the bluesy, ambitious follow-up to Four. On the whole, STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING is a tougher album than any of its predecessors, boasting a gritty sound and several full-on jams. But the key to the album is its length and its sprawling collection of songs, which find Blues Traveler trying anything from country-rock to jangling pop/rock. Blues Traveler are still too loose to be a true pop/rock band, and John Popper would still benefit from a sense of meter, but STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING is the first studio record that captures the essence of the band. The rest of STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING delivers, taking the listener on a wild ride all around that great big world of sound. Blues Traveler have never before sounded as credible a blues band as they do on the swaggering “Carolina Blues” and the brooding, bluesy “Make My Way.” The rest of the material is all over the map, from the dance-floor buoyancy of “Felicia” to the disarming restraint of “Canadian Rose” to the power balladry of “Yours.” This New York foursome remains an improvisational powerhouse onstage, while taking a radio friendlier tack in the studio, emphasizing songs that are more than pegs for extended solos. Though that strategy paid dividends with 1994’s multiplatinum Four, that CD was so lightweight that it seemed as if the band had gone from one extreme to the other. With STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING, the group restores the balance between aggressive interplay and melodic craft. With Popper’s continuing excesses and his defiant unfashionableness, this album won’t change the perception of the band as a meat-and-potatoes outfit that emphasizes chops over image. STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING extends Blues Traveler’s musical vistas, they remain a band that jams without restraint.
