Recall 2cd (aka Snapper Music) puts out groovy, budget-priced double-disc collections, usually by worthy artists, and this 20-track collection by Brit guitar great Robin Trower is no exception. Culled from studio and live recordings from throughout his recording career, DREAMING THE BLUES is more than a taste and thankfully less than a bellyful of Trower's particular brand of guitar virtuosity. Robin Trower surfaced on Rock 'n' Roll's radar as the guitarist with Procol Harum, completing five albums and many tours with the band before breaking away for a solo career in 1971. Basing his band on the power-trio blueprint that had proved so successful for the likes of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, he soon found himself outselling Procol by a considerable factor as he tuned in to the heavier zeitgeist of a new decade. This generous two CD set features 20 classic studio and concert recordings from Trower's solo career. This compilation shows the talent of the ex-Procol Harum guitarist nicely, but anyone who’s anyone will be well acquainted with it all anyway. Comprising the two albums 20th Century Blues from 1994 and 1997’s Someday Blues, plus live highlights from the This Was Now set, spanning 1974 and 1998, it’s a rather skewed compilation, and certainly not definitive. Many of the tracks highlight not only Robin’s guitar and vocal skill, but also his love of power trio blues - Cream and Hendrix. Great live versions of ''Bridge Of Sighs'', ''20th Century Blues'' and ''Crossroads'', which will serve as a great introduction, but the less than informative sleeve notes and lack of anything new for fans makes a potentially great package less than fulfilling. All the Jimi Hendrix comparisons aside, Trower remains an engaging player whose technical acumen rarely if ever gets in the way of the excitement and emotion in his soloing and songwriting, and yes, in that order. As the title suggests, the focus here is on the blues, Trower's psychedelic interpretation of them anyway, and it is not a proper retrospective - nothing form ''Caravan To Midnight'' or the beautiful and criminally underrated ''In City Dreams'' is here. But there are also cuts from throughout his solo career - including a generous helping from the classic Bridge Of Sighs album. Recommended.
