CLUB EDITION.
ESSENTIAL ROBIN TROWER is a strong single-disc collection that features 16 highlights from Robin Trower's long career at Chrysalis, including such staples as "Too Rolling Stoned," plus several key album tracks. While such albums as Bridge Of Sighs work as individual albums, this does a nice job of rounding up highlights from uneven records, making it a nice sampler both for casual fans and the curious. Procol Harum was the springboard for the long solo career of this dazzling guitarist. This 16-song CD perfectly plucks the best from his LPs: ''Too Rolling Stoned'', ''Lady Love'', ''Daydream'', ''Hannah'', ''Bridge Of Sighs'', ''Pride'', ''Shame The Devil'', ''Messin' The Blues'', and more! Based on his subtle playing on Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale," no one expected Robin Trower to become an arena-rock guitar god in the '70s - a guitarist, in fact, that some pundits compared to Jimi Hendrix. Trower certainly was very much influenced by Hendrix. He loved throwing atonal fireworks into his blues-based rock, as all 16 tracks here demonstrate. ESSENTIAL ROBIN TROWER is the best U.S. compilation available, with tracks from all eight of his Chrysalis LPs. It's a bit annoying that "Lady Love" was included instead of "Day Of The Eagle". Which is a little like calling an album Essential Hendrix and excluding "All Along The Watchtower." This does not include works with other artists, such as three with Bryan Ferry and five with Jack Bruce. Not does it include the eight albums made with Procol Harum. This is a single disc compilation of Robin Trower's solo work for Chrysalis from 1973-1981. Robin Trower broke away from Procol Harum after he fell under the influence of Jimi Hendrix. He switched guitars from a Gibson to a Stratocaster and went solo. He formed a power trio and played in the style of Hendrix but did not go over the top like say Frank Marino. His adaption of the style was more funky and bluesy with ethereal type ballads interspersed for contrast. He is no mere copyist however and is good song writer. Most of his songs are originals with the occasional blues cover tune thrown in for good measure. The ESSENTIAL ROBIN TROWER collection is a beginners guide to the hypnotic, fluid guitar style of one of the most under-rated musicians in rock 'n' wah-wah. While Trower is heavily influenced by the blues and Jimi Hendrix, he manages to transcend the obvious, stamping each track with his unique style. The compilation features sixteen cuts from Trower's solo career with Chysalis Records. The disc starts strongly with the epic seven minute string bending sensation "Too Rolling Stoned", followed by the infectious, cowbell accented "Lady Love", and Trower's signature cut "Bridge Of Sighs". Other inspiring numbers from the set include "Shame The Devil", "Victims Of The Fury", "Confessin' Midnight", "Gonna Be More Suspicious", "I Can't Wait Much Longer", and the ballad "Hannah". As with any compilation recording, there are omissions. Overlooked during the selection process for the sixteen song ESSENTIAL ROBIN TROWER retrospective, were "Day Of The Eagle", "Long Misty Days" and "Mad House". If you enjoy inventive 1970's era axe work, you will enjoy this disc. KNOCK IT BACK!
