- Ace Records Ltd.- 029667012928- 400 grn
Dupree Sings While McPhee Picks On The Complete AND UNIQUE Blue Horizon Session Of 1967. All Tracks Previously Unissued Blue Horizon Recordings (2005).
In a lifetime that spanned over 80 years and a recording career that spanned nearly 50 of those years, the great New Orleans blueman Champion Jack Dupree made a lot of records. On his best form Jack had few equals, whether doing barrelhouse blues and ragtime, or just trying to keep abreast of current trends in R&B. Regular trips to the UK during the late 50s and early 1960s seemed to galvanize Jack into producing some of the best work of his career, his albums for UK Decca proving to be especially noteworthy thanks to the production work of Decca staff producer and Dupree fan Mike Vernon and the musicians he employed to back Jack (among them John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Keef Hartley and a youngster from up Grimsby way called Tony McPhee, whom Vernon rechristened "TS"). A rare and unique 1967 session featuring one of the Blues' most beloved singers backed solely by the extraordinary guitar work of the young Tony 'TS' McPhee of Groundhogs fame. The only sides released from this session formed a limited edition, and now quite rare, single in 1967. Most of this material has never been heard publicly since the day it was recorded, 38 years ago. McPhee was close to the beginning of his long recording career when this session was committed to tape, and has since rightly gained recognition as one of the UK's foremost blues and rock guitarists. Ace's immaculate remastering puts the listener in the room with Jack and Tony, so clear is the sound. In a career that spanned more than half a century, Champion Jack recorded no other session like this - Far removed from Dupree’s barrelhouse piano style, it is a real one-off that will amaze those who only know him through records like ''Junkers Blues'' and ''Shim Sham Shimmy''. Notes include Tony McPhee’s personal reminiscences of the session. The session at which these 16 tracks were recorded (in 1967, though there's some speculation it might have been done earlier) was a most unusual one for Champion Jack Dupree, and to a lesser degree for T.S. McPhee. Although Dupree was a pianist, not only does he play no piano here - there is no piano to be heard. Instead, the sole accompaniment is the acoustic guitar of T.S. McPhee, soon to become famous as the figurehead of the British blues-rock band the Groundhogs. It's an unusual combination, and not the best or most characteristic Dupree recording. That doesn't mean, however, that it isn't worthwhile, particularly for some of the more open-minded fans of traditional-styled acoustic blues. Dupree's vocals are characteristically warm and inviting on this set of pretty downhome, rootsy blues, all written by Dupree and McPhee themselves. McPhee's guitar work might be the most noteworthy aspect of this recording date, however, even if he didn't get lead billing. His playing is both proficient and moving, particularly when he unleashes the snakiest of his slide guitar lines, as he does on "Get Your Head Happy," "No Meat Blues," and the brisk "Got My Ticket" in particular. It's a low-key group of recordings, but a pleasantly earthy one. Two of them, "Get Your Head Happy" and "Easy Is The Way," came out on a limited-edition 1967 single, and another on a 1997 CD, but all of the others made their first appearance anywhere on this 2005 compilation.
