The early essentials are here: the solo guitar-and-voice cuts that made Hooker's reputation out of Detroit, singles like "Good Rockin' Mama", "I'm In The Mood," and Keith Richards' favorite "Crawlin' Kingsnake." The latter half of this collection runs to band cuts drawn from The Real Folk Blues, a couple of live recordings, and, coming full circle, a version of "Blues Before Sunrise" that features Hooker singing to the guitar accompaniment. Roy Rogers went on to produce Hooker's The Healer, the album that brought elder bluesman Hooker back into general circulation in the early '90s. When an artist has been as prolific for as long as blues legend John Lee Hooker, a lot of curious items pop up in the discography, including albums of unknown derivation and varying quality. OLD TIME SHIMMY shares something with these recordings in that it's a small label release with no recording information. That shouldn't scare you away, though. This isn't some random live date recorded by a condenser mike tucked in someone's armpit. Rather, it's an effective best-of, featuring some of Hooker's most well-loved tunes in what seem to be their best-known versions (even if they're not, they're strong enough that it doesn't matter). If you're daunted by some of the lengthier, pricier Hooker compilations on the market, OLD TIME SHIMMY is a fine place to make your entry into the rich world of this man's music.
