You can't write it." - John Lee Hooker. Blues legend John Lee Hooker was born in Mississippi, August 22, 1917, a son of poor sharecroppers. He cut his first single, "Boogie Chillen," in 1948. The song hit #1 on the R&B charts and vaulted Hooker into the national scene. 1951's #1 single "I'm In The Mood" established his reputation. The selections on this CD are from the late '50s and early '60's, when John Lee recorded over 100 songs of burning boogie blues under various names for various labels. Over an hour of hallowed Hook classics! Boogie along with the blues icon as his impossibly rich, deep voice delivers ''Boogie Chillen''; ''I'm In The Mood''; ''Crawling King Snake''; ''Never Satisfied''; ''It's My Own Fault''; ''Low Down Midnight Boogie''; ''Louise'', and 13 more. Another of The Essential Blue Archive's series of John Lee Hooker collections, TOO MUCH BOOGIE carries on the trend of the rest of the series. These are superior budget albums, and together they provide an excellent record of Hooker and his music. Neil Slaven's liner notes are excellent, although they stop short of being definitive, and the choice of tracks, although constrained by copyright restrictions, is revelatory. The concluding trio songs provides one of the more thrilling finishes to a Hooker record anywhere. All in all, TOO MUCH BOOGIE is highly recommended.
