COOK WITH THE HOOK is a three disc set comprised of 2 CDs featuring 46 of John Lee Hooker’s seminal recordings, including ’'Crawlin’ King Snake'’, ’'Boom, Boom'’ and many more, and a DVD of a rare 1974 live performance by The Hook at a festival in Massachusetts. On July 6, 1974, the blues legend was one of the main acts at the Down In The Dumps festival in Massachusetts. John Lee Hooker was perhaps the most recognizable and revered of the great post war bluesmen. His recording and performance career spanned six decades, ending on a career high in the 1990s. Hooker made some of the genre's most iconic recordings and collected a legion of acolytes including Van Morrison, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt the 2 CDs include many of his most vital and enduring recordings and many more the rare performance on the DVD was videotaped by a local cable television broadcaster on 6 July 1974 in front of 6,000 people at a festival in Massachusetts, and captures Hooker in fine form. There are only a few live film recordings of Hooker, so it is more of a lucky coincidence that this performance was filmed by three TV cameras and the recording was then saved. During his set in front of 6,000 spectators, Hooker played among others. "Boom Boom", "It Serves You Right To Suffer" and "Whiskey And Wimmen". The double CD is a 46 track best of his career, including "Boogie Chillun", "Crawlin 'King Snake", "I'm In The Mood", "Key To The Highway", "My Baby She's Long And Tall", "Canal Street Blues ”,“ Hobo Blues ”and others. Call John Lee Hooker a “blues legend” and you’re not just mouthing a cliche. You’re missing the specificity of what he brought to the form, the unique strand of DNA he sent coursing through the gene pool of countless rockers and blues artists in his wake. Hooker honed the blues into something new – a grinding, hymnal vamp, which he finessed for all it was worth. Hooker’s essential sound dispensed with the usual 12-bar blues progression to throw the focus on the thrust of the rhythm. It’s deep groove music he made, with a sound as indebted to the beat as funk, and as enamored of repetition as an incantation. In Hooker’s greatest recordings, repetition bred intensity, both in his guitar playing and in his vocals which, in their chanting, droning cadence, could reach the transcendence of devotional singing.
