Popa Chubby- LIVE AT FIP- 2CD- 2003- Popa Chubby Productions/Dixiefrog Records- 3448969234222- 500 grn
Here comes a double CD of this active New York singer and guitar player. Both CDs were recorded live at Radio France 105 studio during Popa’s European tours in 2001 and 2002. You will find sixteen interesting songs which, as he always uses to do, cover an attractive and varied range of musical fields, from Jimmy Hendrix’ or Willie Dixon’s versions to Popa’s own compositions. This time Chubby has recruited two different backing bands who do a professional tasteful work to reach a bright amazing performing which makes Popa shine at a very high level and gain reputation of one of the most outstanding actual bluesmen. These are two excellent CDs that will certainly satisfy all Popa Chubby’s fans. The whipping father of the New York Blues totally unleashed at the 105 studio of Radio France for two exceptional FIP nights. Two hours of raw music mixed by a goldsmith of the sound. The best live of the ogre from Brooklyn to date. The ultimate rage in a diamond! LIVE AT FIP previously available only in France. Get a copy of this if you can. It is Popa's best live album. You can get it from his site at a reasonable price. Then go see him at one of his shows. You won't be disappointed.

Made in the Studio of FIP (France Inter Paris), a French radio that has the great reputation of playing music from any genre (with however a focus on jazz and classic, but you can really find everything on FIP) without any commercial (public radio). But this fact does not make this Live more valuable. It is the best way to discover the whole Popa, between great cover performance (Hey Joe), aggressive solos and singing and energetic blues rock. But this is not what we can call a great live performance comparing to the quality of some studio performance. Chubby's known for his blistering live sets, but this collection takes a risk by having a gradual dramatic arc, starting slowly with a slinky version of "Hey Joe" and working its way up to the frenzied "Keep On The Sunny Side" and "Time Is Killing Me" (consider the solo performance of "How'd A White Boy Get The Blues," a gutsy encore). What's fascinating for returning Chubby fans is that these shows come from 2001 and 2002. You can hear the beginnings of it here on his moving and sincere post-9/11 song "Somebody Let The Devil Out," but the rest of the album is old-school Chubby, ambitious in a different direction and mad at the proverbial "man," not a particular (presidential) man. The slow-burn start is frustrating on first listen, but once you realize the much more exciting second half wouldn't have the punch it has without the buildup, you'll consider LIVE AT FIP a well-built album instead of the usual contractual obligation/quick-buck throwaway. The surprising, beer-stained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" almost puts the album on Chubby's "A" list, but some of the man's key tracks are missing and, despite the great flow, he really needs two CDs to fully represent his sprawling live show. It hedges its bets by keeping it to one, but LIVE AT FIP chalks up another success in a discography that has more than its fair share.
