THE BEST OF THE BBC RECORDINGS is an archive release featuring the best of Marc Bolan and T. Rex's recordings for the BBC. If there's one artist whose success can be almost directly attributed to support from the BBC, it's Marc Bolan. His initial success was unquestionably down to the close friendship he had forged with John Peel, who had Bolan on his show on countless occasions recording sessions, reading poetry, even singing Christmas carols. On his last Radio London show before the station was shut down Peel played no less than six Bolan recordings. This CD is the best of the BBC recordings, taken from the three CD retrospective released in 2006. Twenty four tracks including ''Telegram Sam'', ''Ride A White Swan'', ''Debora'' and more. It was released on 15th October 2007 by BBC Music and Universal Music. Covering 1969 to 1971, this THE BEST OF THE BBC RECORDINGS opens with Marc Bolan singing the network jingle over acoustic guitar and glockenspiel before a performance of “Beltane Walk” sets the tone with raw glitter rock, as Bolan’s Les Paul distorts and breaks up in contrast to his sultry inflections. T. Rex’s handsome rendition of “Life’s A Gas” is another standout, with its prowling rhythms and lunging chorus. But it’s not until a rollicking version of “Jeepster” that you get the sense that T. Rex’s meat-and-potatoes, no-nonsense rhythm section was the solid foundation for Bolan to stretch out, stomp his feet, clap his hands, and unleash some of his signature snarling guitar leads. Inside the Top Gear recorded take on “Iscariot” can be heard a triumvirate of influences in motion. Syd Barrett’s sideways approach to songwriting affects Bolan as he sings of birds, jewels, and wood with a tremolo trill in his voice that would later influence Devendra Banhart. “Telegram Sam” ends the comp by pumping ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll through a velvety-golden glam filter. This set serves the listener well as both an introduction to Marc's large BBC output and also stands up well as an album in it's own right. Tracks are not in chronological order and Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex material sits back to back. But it still works because it's always Marc. Sound quality is excellent and belays the age and nature of these recordings. The booklet gives just the recording dates and details together with some nice shots of Marc Bolan. Is this THE BEST OF THE BBC RECORDINGS worth it? Every penny!
