FOR THE LION AND THE UNICORN IN THE OAK FORESTS OF FAUN is a 2-CD album set featuring twenty two great tracks on disc one, and an interview with Marc Bolan recorded in Chicago on 23rd August 1969 on disc two. The album was released on 17th November 2003 by Chrome Dreams Production. Flipping extraordinary, this! In the sixties Marc Bolan gigged with a bongo player called Steve Took, and they called themselves Tyrannosaurus Rex. They were very obscure and hardly known outside of hippy underground circles. Now it emerges that someone had the presence of mind to record some of their live concerts, and although the sound quality ain't great, it's a real gift for fans of early Bolan stuff. This recording showcases just how talented these two were. This is a glimpse of what the London underground scene was like in the late sixties. It's an album of old "lost" live recordings dating back from 1969, at the most part at John Peel's Midnight Court, the Lyceum, London. You get one cd of the live recordings and a cd of a very interesting interview with Marc from 1969. You also get a decent little booklet which contains some great photos and info about the recordings, plus a piece by John Peel. The performances by Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took in themselves are faultless and, for a nostalgic point of view, it is very atmospheric.

Until very recently, you was completely unaware of this vintage live Tyrannosaurus Rex 2-CD title. Most of these tracks are from a live gig that took place at the Lyceum in London on 11th April 1969. You loved hearing those timeless T. Rex gems like the familiar-sounding "Hot Rod Mama", the mesmerizing "Debora", "Mustang Ford", "Chariots Of Silk", one that you don't remember at all "Once Upon The Seas Of Abyssinia", their thirty-second snippet of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" and "The Wizard". With disc two, you get an exclusive forty-three minute interview with Marc Bolan recorded in Chicago later that year - covering a variety of subjects like how they decided on the Tyrannosaurus Rex moniker, how he was personally inspired by electric guitars, the current music scene, Jimi Hendrix and the current wave of British progressive rock. FOR THE LION AND THE UNICORN IN THE OAK FORESTS OF FAUN is one of the earliest known live recordings of Tyrannosaurus Rex and, as such, stands among the most precious artifacts in the entire Marc Bolan catalog. One of the first shows to feature Bolan stepping out with an electric guitar, it sees the group already poised for the transition that would, a couple of years later, take the entire country by surprise. But still it captures precisely the same mystic magic that the duo was already renowned for, a world of elves and unicorns, Afghan women and Abyssinian seas, and Bolan's inimitable grasp of life through lyrics set to a churning sea of half-electric rumination. Powerful set drawing from all three Tyrannosaurus Rex LPs to date highlights the glory that was theirs for the taking, and if a better quality tape ever turns up, it would be the rival of any other live Marc Bolan out there.
