DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD is the twelfth and final studio album by English rock band T. Rex. It was released on 11th March 1977 by record label EMI. DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD was regarded by music fan as a comeback for the band. It was praised for the strength of the songwriting and Bolan's vocal performances. However, it would prove to be the band's final album, as Marc Bolan died in a car crash on 16th September 1977 at the age of 29. DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD was remastered for CD by Edsel Records in 1994 as part of their extensive T. Rex reissue campaign. A companion release, entitled PRINCE OF PLAYERS (THE ALTERNATE DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD) was released on 11th August 1998 and contained alternative versions and studio rough mixes of the main album and bonus tracks. A combined album digipak was released on 13th August 2002. DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD is a genuinely high note for Marc Bolan to end his career on. On DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD Marc Bolan had genuinely turned a corner and while it may not be massively innovative musically, there is a sense of self-assurance and integrity that had been missing from T. Rex recordings for a while.

Upon its original release in spring 1977, DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD was widely applauded as Marc Bolan's best album in three years. It is no surprise, then, to discover that Bolan's demos and rough mixes for the record echoed those same discoveries. PRINCE OF PLAYERS, its title taken from a lyric in the title track, unearthing each of the original album's songs in alternate form, offering up a glimpse of how Bolan arrived at the final cut, but also showing just how disciplined that process was. None of the demos vary too much from the finished thing, but they do pack an unexpected freshness, while the speed with which Bolan was moving is illustrated by the fact that several tracks no longer exist in early studio incarnations, and are replaced by live renditions instead. Equally startling is the realization that for the first time in some years, Marc Bolan was actually recording material as he wrote it. "Celebrate Summer", the last single Bolan released during his lifetime. It was intended as a celebration not only of the season, but also of all the seismic shocks that had shaken British music that year. Bolan is in his best voice in years, and he newfound fire. Neither is that an accident. The young punks supported T Rex on their final U.K. tour. PRINCE OF PLAYERS is the final album in Edsel's re-examination of Bolan's 1972-1977 album catalog. But even in the face of material that Bolan himself would never have allowed off the shelf, everything is, in its own way, irresistible. And why? Because everyone still loves to boogie. DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD is a decent addition and closing chapter to Marc Bolan's recording career. It's the most consistent album he's made since Electric Warrior. Any compilation that doesn't include "Dandy In The Underworld" can't be taken seriously.
