BOLAN'S ZIP GUN is the tenth studio album by English rock band T. Rex, released on 16th February 1975 by record label EMI. Eight of the eleven songs on the album had already been released in the US the 1974 year on the Light Of Love album on Casablanca Records. BOLAN'S ZIP GUN was a repackage with three extra tracks. In 1994, Edsel Records's released BOLAN'S ZIP GUN as part of their extensive T. Rex reissue campaign, but cut down on the number of bonus tracks. A companion release, entitled PRECIOUS STAR (THE ALTERNATE BOLAN'S ZIP GUN), was released on 18th June 1996 which contained alternative versions, studio rough mixes, a live version and demos of the main album and bonus tracks. A combined album digipak was released on 17th September 2002. BOLAN'S ZIP GUN was less a reiteration of Marc Bolan's new direction than a confirmation of it. Much of the album returns to the understated romp he had always excelled at. All echo with the effortless lightheartedness which was Bolan at his most carelessly buoyant. But the essence of BOLAN'S ZIP GUN remains firmly in the funky pastures which characterized Zinc Alloy, with the only significant difference lying in the presentation. BOLAN'S ZIP GUN further indications of just how seriously Bolan was taking his new role - and how far he'd moved from the bopping elf of three years earlier. Marc Bolan made records that fell smack between the two poles. And yet, played back to back alongside the "classics," there ain't much wrong with any of them. And BOLAN'S ZIP GUN hits as hard as any of them.

A loving recreation of the BOLAN'S ZIP GUN album, pieced together via outtakes, demos, and live performances, PRECIOUS STAR ranks among the finest albums in Bolan's entire "alternate" series. Melodies are enhanced - "Light Of Love" has never sounded so sweet. Ideas are expanded - three early versions of "Till Dawn" and two of "Golden Belt" point any number of conclusions to that most delicate of Bolan ballads, and energies explode. A ten-plus-minute version of "Zip Gun Boogie", recorded in Cleveland on T. Rex's final U.S. tour in 1974, is simply staggering, proof that the strength of Bolan's guitar playing had been neither diminished, nor deterred, by the withering of his fame. In the studio, the song was swamped by its production. On stage, Bolan's natural gift for savage simplicity is unhindered by any other considerations. That is the joy of this entire album. Almost without exception, the alternate takes have such an edge on their released counterparts that you cannot help but question the decisions which went into the final release. Infinitely impulsive, unambiguously playful, and drop-dead gorgeous punchy, PRECIOUS STAR is the sound of Bolan at his purist best, before the session lapsed into a cut and paste attempt to graft whatever the big bad world's latest favorite sounds might be onto the simple magic that was the genuine Bolan boogie. Decades on, each of Bolan's latter day albums retain a hint of their original controversy, but hindsight lends them an impact which contemporary listeners could never have imagined.
