BORN TO BOOGIE: THE CONCERTS is a two CD set containing both Wembley Empire Pool shows, in their entirety, from the day in March 1972 that marked the peak of T.Rextasy. Presented in a digipak with a booklet with new annotation by Mark Paytress and previously unpublished Keith Morris photos, several of the songs from the second show have never been issued on CD. This live was shot for the movie Born To Boogie - The Motion Picture, which was made in 1972 and directed by Ringo Starr of The Beatles. In this reissue, it features new remastering and includes tracks available as CD audio track for the first time. It was released on 13th June 2016 by Demon Music Group. Everything captures Bolan’s on/off stage charisma, the jam and acoustic sessions are of testament to the fact that he wasn’t just a pretty face, and the sound is excellent for the vintage. The CDs are a nice collectors’ pieces.
COMPILATION INCLUDES:
CD1 - THE MATINEE SHOW;
CD2 - THE EVENING SHOW.
PERSONNEL: Marc Bolan - vocals, guitars; Mickey Finn - hand percussion, congas; Steve Currie - bass; Bill Legend - drums.
The outer front picture-sleeve, without doubt, captures the spirit of Marc Bolan and we see him riding a tiger, with the background pattern using the same image divided into tiny squares. THE MATINEE SHOW kicks off with compere Emperor Rosko’s announcement, “Get ready to welcome one of the greatest...” before a dynamic guitar intro brings us to first track ‘'Cadilac'’. Heavy guitar solo adds the oomph factor. On '‘Jeepster'’ the beat is stomping and punchy and the song sees a frantic outro. ‘'Baby Strange'’ is performed in a pretty straightforward manner, but that doesn’t mean it’s a poor song. The beauty of stripped down acoustic comes to great effect on ‘'Spaceball Ricochet'’ with its mellow and harmonious intro and of course its dreamy melody. Both ‘'Girl’' and ‘'Cosmic Dancer'’ are much in the same vein: mellow, beautiful and acoustic. ‘'Telegram Sam'’ breaks into the funky groove with the electrifying dance beat. Next up, Marc announces ‘'Hot Love'’. Of course, ‘'Get It On'’ has got to be an epic and it is. Clocking in over eleven minutes, it’s everything from scorching to simply great. It’s riff heavy and the glistening guitar solos with wah-wah fuzzed up chords come across top notch - followed by a percussion solo. Pure rock ‘n’ roll dynamite. An encore, with Rosko asking, “T.Rex, ladies and gentlemen… how about that?! Would you like to hear one more?”. The encore in question is ‘'Summertime Blues'’ and its catchy and rocking beat does the Eddie Cochran original more than proud. On second CD the set list/track listing is exactly the same, though there are slight variations as far as announcements are concerned and other little detours. These were live concerts so band and audience went with the flow and the spur of the moment. Here too the undisputed highlight is ‘'Get It On’'. It even more electrifying and dance orientated. Even the encore is the same, with Rosko teasing the audience, “Are you ready for one more? I wanna hear your appreciation!” followed by the chanting of fans. ‘'Summertime Blues'’ sounds just though possibly even more cranked up. These two memorable concerts took place on 18th March 1972 and hard to believe as it all sounds so fresh and crisp and well… timeless.
