1972 was a banner year for T. Rex's Marc Bolan. The glam rock pioneer was riding high thanks to the success of 1971's chart-topping Electric Warrior, and would continue his streak of hits with The Slider. Before the year was out, T. Rex would play in both the U.S. and U.K., appear regularly on the BBC, and star in the concert film Born To Boogie produced and directed by Ringo Starr under the Apple Films banner. The band savored the wave of T.Rextasy. Now, Demon Records is celebrating Bolan's legacy with MESSING WITH THE MYSTIC: UNISSUED SONGS 1972-1977. Album was released in October 1994. MESSING WITH THE MYSTIC: UNISSUED SONGS 1972-1977 is a 1994 German 24-track CD album compilation of unpublished songs including raw acoustic demo tracks and unfinished sketches which never made it to the studio. MESSING WITH THE MYSTIC does its job admirably, capturing all of the best moments from those discs, including "Children Of The World", "Down Home Lady", "Foxy Boy", "Endless Sleep" and the immortally titled "Reelin' An' A Rockin' An' A Boppin' An' A Bolan". Even though these are the best moments of the unreleased discs, keep in mind that these are still outtakes from a man with a notoriously inconsistent body of work. They aren't necessarily killer, they're just the best of the leftovers. Which means that this is for dedicated fans, not fans who aren't obsessed. When Marc Bolan died in that car crash on 16th September 1977 all fan was so crushed because they knew that was the end of future studio recordings by Marc. Well, but dreams do come true. Within months bootlegs were appearing and suddenly these began to see the light of legitimate labels, ie.EMI. One of these releases is MESSING WITH THE MYSTIC: UNISSUED SONGS 1972-1977 and it is chock full of Bolangoodies. Lots of track demos either from the studio or his own home studio. Many with Gloria Jones lending her vocal talents. ''Sky Church Music'' is the pre Bolan's Zip Gun track as an example of how his songs evolved from demo to studio blowout. Marc Bolan was always charming with just his guitar and warblings, you must listen to ''Is It True'', ''Over The Flats'' and ''Jet Tambourine''. Included are those tracks that Bolanites heard might exist like ''Savage Beethoven'', ''Bust My Ball''. ''Funky London Childhood'' later became ''Visions Of Domino'' on the Dandy In The Underworld album, which has also been issued on CD. Viscounti said Marc was always recording and by the number of EMI's Unchained series, he most certainly was right. All in all steadfast Bolanites was quite happy with this release.
