THE SOUL SESSIONS is a release set up to help fund The Marc Bolan School Of Music And Film in Sierra Leone working in co-ordination with Marc's Family features partner singer songwriter Gloria Jones and son Rolan Feld. It was released on 25th September 2015 by Light Of Love/Easy Action Recordings. Features unreleased tracks produced by Marc and Gloria for Gloria's own releases and her brother Richard Jones' unreleased album and for the abandoned album by T.Rex backing singer Sister Pat Hall. All tracks have been audio restored and remastered from new sources. Marc Bolan’s atempts to establish and, in some ways, reinvent himself as a fount of seventies soul authenticity always fell some way short of capturing the public imagination. Both at the time, as he wrestled with his own commercial decline post-1973, and in more recent years, his work with Gloria Jones, her brother Richard Jones and Sister Pat Hall either went ignored or was left altogether unreleased. But must mention Jones’s name to most people, and she was the creator of the original “Tainted Love”, long, long before. So, a two CD compilation of out-takes, broadcast versions, home recordings and masters should be of interest only to the most open-minded Marc Bolan completists, right? Wrong. Lovingly curated in a manner that too few Bolan collections ever are, THE SOUL SESSIONS is an object lesson both in how seriously Bolan took his soul, and how good he was at creating it.

In some respects this album has been forty years in the making... Even today it still sounds remarkably fresh and different from anything before or since. Marc Bolan was trail blazing going into these sessions, and the eighteen months spent pulling the majority of this together, inbetween Zinc Alloy and the Zip Gun sessions, was not only a labour of love, but the inspiration for a directional change that sadly never found. Of course he was writer or cowriter of all but a handful of tracks, but he was also responsible for rearranging familiar Bolan boogies to match all that his artists could bring to them. Gloria Jones’s voice, after all, was a thing of wonder, and Sister Pat Hall wasn’t far behind, Richard Jones, less so, but he’s only here for four of the twenty-eight tracks. And though the glam rock faithful might raise an eyebrow, it was not difficult for either to mine the soulful roots in even Bolan’s classics. Versions of many of these tracks found their way into the public arena over the past two decades. They gave the first indication that there were in fact better master recordings in existence. This release by Easy Action/ Light Of Love Wax Co. has pulled together, from a wide variety of sources, the twenty eight tracks that make up this double cd. It’s probably the closest we’re ever truely likely to get to that finished product Bolan was working on in the mid 70’s. If your love to Marc Bolan ended at any time prior to the release of Tanx, THE SOUL SESSIONS probably won’t have you leaping around the room with excitement. But if his own efforts to embrace soul and R&B across his own compositions mean anything at all to you, this is a powerful, and much needed package.
