These are the recordings Bolan made before joining John's Children. In 1972, a clutch of incomplete demos and outtakes were unearthed from Marc Bolan's mid-'60s vault and sent into the world as the HARD ON LOVE album. Two years later, Track Record released the proceedings as THE BEGINNING OF DOVES. The tracks comprise a series of largely unaccompanied demos recorded by Bolan and producer Simon Napier-Bell during one breathless session in October 1966. One then leaps ahead to the following fall, for songs taped over two separate demo sessions by Marc Bolan and his Tyrannosaurus Rex partner Steve Peregrine-Took. THE BEGINNING OF DOVES was the album due to follow Bolan's departure from the moddish John's Children, but it was never released, as Bolan unleashed Tyrannosaurus Rex then it's louder if shorter progeny T.Rex upon the world. And when Bolan, many moons later, did take an interest in the tapes again, his untimely appointment with a tree in Barnes stopped him from ever remixing them. Historically then, if not musically, there's a mild justification for THE BEGINNING OF DOVES, though anyone turned on by "20th Century Boy" will find this gossamer-thin collection distinctly uncool, as it's very much in the Tyrannosaurus Rex acoustic-guitar-over-bongos format. In October 1966, Marc Bolan in a bold move, showed up at The Yardbirds manager Simon Napier-Bell’s door. He sat right down and played, so impressing Bell that he immediately took Bolan into De Lane Studios in London and recorded fourteen demos in one 50-minute session. These demos - along with six others recorded later that year - were released as THE BEGINNING OF DOVES in 1974. Whilst this album of demos is not Bolan’s official debut, it marks the beginning of his output. This is the 37-track reissue from 2002, and many of the tracks are just alternate takes of the same song. It was released on 23rd July 2002 by Sanctuary Records and BMG Company. The 2002 reissue is made up of ... the flopped Bell's single released in 1966, “Hippy Gumbo” backed by “Misfit”, the solo demo recordings Bolan made at De Lane Studios, and demo sessions from his first band, Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1967. Save for the single, the songs are quite stark, demonstrating the hippie sound of Bolan’s debut didn't just happen. There was a logical progression of sound, as heard on these takes. While many of the songs are straight blues and 1950's-style ballads, they each display Bolan’s signature whiney vocal style. Most of the time you can’t make out a word he's saying, but the noise he comes up with fits the songs like another instrument, and is above all unique. In fact, virtually every song here is a very sloppy but interesting track. None are over 3 minutes in length, and some aren't even 2 minutes, but each track reveals the genius that Marc Bolan most clearly was - whether it be solo on acoustic, backed by orchestration, or just by Steve Took pounding away on bongos. Bolan’s presence shines through. THE BEGINNING OF DOVES probably shouldn’t be anyone's first Bolan purchase, but even so it's an album that shouldn't be overlooked, for there are some fascinating gems here, and it's an essential release for anyone interested in how Bolan created his hippie sound. This is more like it an absolute treasure trove of early Marc Bolan solo and Tyrannosaurus Rex tracks. Cool though...
