Rex were a British rock band, formed in 1967 by singer/songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. The band formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex, releasing four albums as an acoustic duo under that name and winning a following among the British "underground" audience. After earning success in the early and mid-1970s, the band broke up after Bolan was killed in a 1977 car accident. MISTY MIST is a collection of ten early Marc Bolan tracks recorded in 1967 or 1968, all of which can be found on the album The Beginning Of Doves alongside the ten other songs these are intended to be packaged with. Castle Records' 2002 reissue of The Beginning Of Doves adds 17 bonus tracks to the previous release, a total of 27 more tracks than those which appear here, making it the quintessential edition. Combined with OBSERVATIONS album you would get the full set of tracks. Indeed, chunks of The Beginning Of Doves, like "Cat Black", a classic bit of Tolkien-on-acid, turned up later on Tyrannosaurus Rex cuts. “Hot Rod Mama”, “Mustang Ford”, “One Inch Rock”, and “Charlie” are all original blues numbers where Marc Bolan uses a more restrained vocal, and each demonstrate that he wasn't yet very capable on guitar. “Jasmine ‘49” is a Folk/Rock tune with attitude, featuring Bolan’s best guitar on the album, and he also nails the vocals as well. “Misty Mist” is a creepy tune with another great vocal melody on top of a gently-strummed acoustic. Dotty ditties like "One Inch Rock" and "Pictures Of Purple People" have a whistlable whimsy, while "Red Hot Momma" has Bolan warming, but the writing is so insubstantial it's no wonder he re-invented himself as an electric warrior bringing boogie to the kids. It's an essential release for anyone interested in how Bolan created his hippie sound.
