The Blues Brothers- THE CLOSING OF WINTERLAND 31st DECEMBER 1978- CD- 1978/2017-
- RoxVox Production- 5292317207622- 400 grn
THE CLOSING OF WINTERLAND derives from the fact that it was the last concert in San Francisco's Winterland Arena, which was shut down shortly thereafter. The Dead celebrated the closing as an approximately five-hour-long party (complete with breakfast with the audience at dawn) and invited some guests including guitarist John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Ken Kesey as well as actor Dan Aykroyd who provided the midnight countdown. The New Riders Of The Purple Sage and Blues Brothers opened the show. On December 31st 1978, Bill Graham’s Legendary Winterland in closed with an Epic All-Night Performance by the Grateful Dead. Opening the bill were The Blues Brothers, led by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, backed by the cream of America’s R&B musicians. Telecast live in front of a rapturous audience on KQED Public Television and simulcast on KSAN-FM radio, the music is infectious and the show has been described as the best the band ever gave. It's presented here together with background notes and images.
PERSONNEL: Joliet Jake Blues (John Belushi) - vocals; Elwood Blues (Dan Akroyd) - harmonica, vocals; Steve Cropper - guitar; Matt Murphy - guitar; Donald Dunn - bass; Tom Malone - trombone, trumpet, saxophone; Lou Marini - saxophone; Tom Scott - saxophone; Alan Rubin - trumpet; Paul Shaffer - keyboards; Murphy Dunne - piano; Steve Jordan - drums; Willie Hall - drums.
This performance captures the group at their prime. With Belushi and Akroyd's rapidly growing fame on Saturday Night Live and an extremely receptive audience, this may be their most exciting performance. The last concert at Winterland in San Francisco, December 31, 1978, saw the Blues Brothers of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd aka ''Joliet'' Jake and Elwood Blues ''open'' for the Grateful Dead: the vintage recording, taken from a radio program, gives us an incomplete but dynamic and fun show, perfect for warming spirits and igniting the enthusiasm of the crowd. Opened by Willie Dixon's ''Hey Bartender'' (with which the band debuted during an episode of Saturday Night Live) and closed by the famous ''Jailhouse Rock'', the lineup is full of non-obvious classics (such as ''Groove Me'' by King Floyd) and some tributes to the Canadian Downchild Blues Band (with some original songs and arrangements of standards such as ''Flip, Flop & Fly'') dedicated to the best vintage rock and roll, soul, blues and rhythm & blues. Rarely have the Dead been able to count on such an enthralling ''opening act''.
