BEST OF THE BLUES BROTHERS is the fourth and final Blues Brothers album released before John Belushi's death in 1982. It is the first compilation album by the band and it was released by Atlantic Records on November 30, 1981. Along with tracks from the first three albums, Briefcase Full Of Blues, The Blues Brothers: Music From The Soundtrack and Made In America, it includes unreleased live versions of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", "Rubber Biscuit", and a new song, "Expressway To Your Heart". The album was remixed by Steve Jordan and Donald “Duck” Dunn. Belushi’s wife, Judith Jacklin, designed the sleeve.
PERSONNEL: Elwood Blues – backing vocals, harmonica; lead vocals, co-lead vocals; "Joliet" Jake Blues – lead vocals; backing vocals; Steve "The Colonel" Cropper – guitar; Donald "Duck" Dunn – bass guitar; Murphy "Murph" Dunne – keyboards, electric piano, Wurlitzer; Willie "Too Big" Hall – drums; Steve "Getdwa" Jordan – drums, background vocals; Lou "Blue Lou" Marini – tenor saxophone, alto saxophone; Matt "Guitar" Murphy – lead guitar; Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin – trumpet; Tom "Bones" Malone – trombone, horn arrangements; Tom "Triple Scale" Scott – tenor and alto saxophones; Paul "The Shiv" Shaffer – keyboards, piano, background vocals, music director.
No one could beat Elwood and Jake in their revival crusade of the true spirit which animated primeval Rhythm & Blues; true to the principle that there’s no festivities unless there’s crowd participation their short recorded output was mostly captured in front of an audience; one may argue this was a fabricated band but who cares when their music is so vibrant, played with so much abandon and delivered in pristine flawless manner by a bunch a hardened music pros; one can also argue there was no need for a BEST OF THE BLUES BROTHERS after only 3 albums, namely because the selection isn’t really equally representative of what’s on those albums. But again, who cares? There’s only one title from Made In America, there’s a pair from the soundtrack album The Blues Brothers and a quartet from their Briefcase Full Of Blues debut and to round things with some appetizing attributes a trio of previously unissued tracks was added to the collection. With the support of all those unbeatable studio icons such as Donald “Duck” Dunn or Lou Marini, Tom Scott or Steve Cropper, Alan Rubin or Matt “Guitar” Murphy” the brothers distill their energizing prayers before completely subjugated congregations in a ceremony whose only flaw is to be, at just 5 minutes over ½ an hour, too damn short!
