TRIPLICATE is the thirty-eighth studio album by Bob Dylan, released by Columbia Records on 31st March 2017. As with most of Dylan's 21st century output, he produced the album himself under the pseudonym ''Jack Frost''. Like Dylan's previous two studio albums, TRIPLICATE features covers of classic American songs recorded live with his touring band and without the use of overdubs. The album is Dylan's first three-disc album, featuring thirty songs across its three discs, each individually titled and presented in a thematically-arranged ten-song sequence. TRIPLICATE showcases Dylan's unique and much-lauded talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader. The artist's two previous albums of classic American songs, Fallen Angels and Shadows In The Night, were both worldwide hits and garnered Grammy Award nominations. Fallen Angels achieved Top Ten debuts in more than a dozen countries. Rock's most influential songwriter hasn't released an album of original compositions in five years. He's focused instead on the Great American Songbook, in particular pre-rock standards. It's almost as though he tackles the well-known tunes so you can hear how he's Dylanized them. Backed by a small band, and the occasional horn section, he sings with care and nuance, looking back on past loves and losses with a tone of brooding regret that eventually ebbs into a kind of reluctant acceptance. It's possible to read the title of TRIPLICATE in two ways. First, the 2017 collection is the third installment in Bob Dylan's exploration of the Great American Songbook, following quickly on the heels of 2015's Shadows In The Night and 2016's Fallen Angels. Secondly, TRIPLICATE is indeed a triple-album, or perhaps more accurately, a set of three interlinked albums all running 32 minutes apiece. Each of the three discs are given titles and they're presented in a manner not dissimilar to an old-fashioned album of 78 RPMs, a nod to the dawn of popular recorded music. Dylan is captivated by this music, reveling in the lyrics, restoring intros often left off of modern interpretations, bending his style to fit the songs instead of vice-versa. Like Fallen Angels before it, TRIPLICATE is palpably lighter than the weary Shadows In The Night, and that's not just because there are livelier tempos here. Much of this breeziness derives from Dylan's performance. Cherishing the turns of phrase as much as the intent of the song, he sings with a sly sensitivity that's alluring. When he elongates a phrase or has his voice crack, he reveals more about the song than any retro-swinger with showboating chops. Dylan treats these common classics with much care. Its appearance suggests how TRIPLICATE, along with its cousins, is an ongoing exploration of Sinatra's body of work, but if Dylan learned anything from Sinatra, it's how to drill to the core of the song. Dylan does just that on TRIPLICATE, finding the heart beating within some old warhorses and placing them within several great American musical traditions, and that's why this cements his place as one of the most distinctive interpreters of the Great American Songbook.
