Bob Dylan- TEMPEST: Deluxe Limited Edition- CD- 2012-
- Columbia Records/Sony Music Entertainment- 887254641421- 700 grn
TEMPEST is the thirty-fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 10th September 2012, by Columbia Records. Dylan wrote all of the songs himself with the exception of "Duquesne Whistle", which he co-wrote with longtime Grateful Dead associate Robert Hunter. TEMPEST was released to acclaim from music fans, who praised its traditional music influences and Dylan's dark lyrics. TEMPEST was Dylan's last album to feature original material until his 2020 album Rough And Rowdy Ways. The music is the same stew of beautifully played blues, rockabilly, folk and country as every Dylan album for the last twelve years. Bob Dylan, it seems, is determined to see out his days playing pop music from the era before Bob Dylan changed pop music for good, as if he'd rather forget that he ever did so. But equally, there are incredible moments. No one has ever articulated furious contempt more vividly than Dylan at his peak, an emotion that's been noticeably lacking from his recent albums. But now someone or something has clearly riled him. The Deluxe Limited Edition CD includes a 60-page notebook of rare vintage magazines with Bob Dylan on the front cover.
PERSONNEL: Bob Dylan – guitar, piano, vocals; Tony Garnier – bass guitar; Donnie Herron – steel guitar, banjo, violin, mandolin; David Hidalgo – guitar, accordion, violin; Charlie Sexton, Stu Kimball – guitar; George G. Receli – drums.
Fifty years after Bob Dylan's debut album appeared, we get TEMPEST. It's a gritty, cantankerous record with abundant images of violence, lust, and humor, though the latter is often black. His protagonists settle scores with lovers, enemies, and power brokers. They're often self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating simultaneously. Death - mass death, helpless death, inevitable death - is the real story here, and TEMPEST is very much a record about The End. Whom we loved, who failed us, and what it all means in the face of our own inevitable demise. Dylan's long been enamored with Appalachian murder ballads, but he's finally learned, at 71, that death doesn't necessarily come with a lesson, sometimes it just comes. David Hidalgo's old-world accordion plays the signature swaggering, razor-sharp guitar riff underscoring the notion that the blues are universal, timeless. Dylan's nasty rasp fueled by lust, vengeance, and power is balanced by his wicked humor. The nearly 14-minute, 45-verse title cut retells the story of the Titanic with references to history and film. Hearing it once is enough. "Roll On John", Dylan's elegy for friend John Lennon, closes the set. He uses a slew of Lennon's own lyrics as a tribute. The end result is moving but clumsy. But at least Dylan finally sounds engaged, his garbled vocals heavy with sorrow and helplessness. In that sense, it's a fitting coda for an album bogged down with resignation. These last two cuts aside, TEMPEST is still a damn fine album. Dylan is in mostly excellent form even when sloppy. It sounds like he's having the time of his life.
