CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART is the thirty-fourth studio album and first Christmas album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 13th October 2009, by Columbia Records. The album comprises a collection of hymns, carols, and popular Christmas songs. All Dylan's royalties from the sale of this album benefit the charities. Dylan said that, although he was born and raised Jewish, he never felt left out of Christmas during his childhood in Minnesota. Regarding the popularity of Christmas music, it's so worldwide and everybody can relate to it in their own way. He converted to Christianity in the late 1970s. As with most of Dylan's 21st Century output, he produced it himself under the pseudonym ''Jack Frost''. When Bob Dylan, the patron saint of sneering, disaffected poets, announced he was releasing a collection of classic Christmas songs for charity, smirkers got smirkier. It sounded insane. Regardless of intent, CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART is a surreal and occasionally rousing collection of gooey holiday ballads, complete with animatronic backing vocals and Nashville-smooth arrangements. It's a nice assortment of hymns and popular carols.

After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa", which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair, but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Restores "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin. There are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there's an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. And, of course, there's no better time for celebratory sound, swing, and nostalgia than the holidays, which may be why CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART is a bit of a left-field delight. Dylan's thing has never been palatability, and he's clearly enamored with contrast - in this case, between his worn, gravel-gargle voice and everything else. And it's his unhinged vocals that make CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART interesting, and, in some ways, appropriate to its subject. In practice, Christmas songs aren't about perfect pitch and studied harmonies, they're about slouching around an out-of-tune piano with your relatives, sloshing back store-bought eggnog, and hollering songs you learned in kindergarten. And you'll singing with abandon, without training, without self-consciousness nearly all of your life.
