BOB DYLAN BOOTLEG Series.
BOB DYLAN LIVE 1975 - THE ROLLING THUNDER REVUE: The Bootleg Series Vol.5 is a live album by Bob Dylan released by Columbia Records on 26th November 2002. Until the release of this album, the only official live documentation of The Rolling Thunder Revue was Hard Rain, recorded during received second leg of the tour. Album spent nine weeks on the chart and was certified and awarded a Gold Record. Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue didn’t last long. From its conception to its dissolution, it spanned just under a year. Maybe that’s why Dylan professes ignorance about the inspiration for his roving carnival in The Rolling Thunder Revue, but sharing the same basic momentum, distinguished by passion. The vigor doesn’t belong to Dylan alone. The Guam band is unwieldy and enthusiastic. Rivera’s careening gypsy violin lends an earthy wildness to the proceedings, while Ronson’s guitar pulls the music back into focus whenever it threatens to get too folky. Despite this kinetic kick, The Rolling Thunder Revue is at its core a hootenanny, a down-home bash that’s equally earnest and corny. Its folkie heart is evident by Joan Baez’s role as Dylan’s co-star and foil. Dylan plays with a wild-eyed fervor that’s partially inspired and partially shtick, and he’s surrounded not by sycophants but old friends who acknowledge his bullshit and find it amusing.

The biggest criticism of BOB DYLAN LIVE 1975 - THE ROLLING THUNDER REVUE: The Bootleg Series Vol.5 is that it's a compilation of highlights from his Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975, one that doesn't set out to replicate a set list but instead offers two discs and twenty two tracks from this fabled tour. Apart from that, there's very little to complain about on this superlative set. Yes, this had been heavily bootlegged over the decades, plus it was documented on Dylan's notoriously film Renaldo And Clara and there was Hard Rain, a collection that was similar but sour and nowhere near as good the 1975 material, as this superb set illustrates. Hearing this is a revelation, even for serious Dylan watchers. They find this equally absorbing, since this is simply tremendous. It has become legend that Dylan will change arrangements and switch lyrics at the drop of a hat, which was evident on his jaunt with The Band in 1974, preserved for posterity on Before The Flood. Even so, he's looser, wilder, and more alive in this careening, thrilling album. As that suggests, the wildest thing about this is the electric cuts, where an unwieldy band turns out an overpowering sound that sounds inevitable, as if it's the only way these songs could be played. The acoustic moments don't pack the same charge, yet they're intimate, passionate versions of the songs. In fact, there's not a bad moment here. The tour erased the barrier separating ruse and reality, and that deliberate, wicked conflation is as quintessentially Dylanesque as the fact that it lasted for a matter of weeks and then disappeared, its vibrant spirit never again conjured by its maker.
