BOB DYLAN BOOTLEG Series.
BOB DYLAN LIVE 1966 - THE “ROYAL ALBERT HALL” CONCERT is a two-disc live album by Bob Dylan, released on 13th October 1998. It is the second installment in the ongoing Bob Dylan Bootleg Series on Legacy Recordings, and has been certified a Gold Record. It was recorded at the Manchester Free Trade Hall during Dylan's 1966 World Tour, though early bootlegs attributed the recording to the Royal Albert Hall so it became known as THE “ROYAL ALBERT HALL” CONCERT. The set list consisted of two parts, with the first half of the concert being Dylan alone on stage performing an entirely acoustic set of songs, while the second half of the concert has Dylan playing an "electric" set of songs alongside his band The Hawks. The first half of the concert was greeted warmly by the audience, while the second half was highly criticized, with heckling going on before and after each song. The greatest live recording in rock & roll history was buried in the vaults of Columbia Records for more than a quarter of a century. But no more. BOB DYLAN LIVE 1966 - THE “ROYAL ALBERT HALL” CONCERT has surfaced on two discs mixed and mastered from three-track source tapes that put the myriad pirated recordings to shame. More important, BOB DYLAN LIVE 1966 - THE “ROYAL ALBERT HALL” CONCERT documents a momentous artistic showdown between a willful, inflamed, and utterly fearless performer and his headstrong core following. The Dylan of the mid '60s had made the leap from socially conscious voice of his generation to surrealistic electric poet. A crucial moment and, time has demonstrated, the correct call.
PERSONNEL: Bob Dylan – vocal, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, piano; Robbie Robertson – electric guitar; Garth Hudson – organ; Richard Manuel – piano; Rick Danko – bass guitar, backing vocal; Mickey Jones – drums.
The most famous bootleg in rock history, with the possible exception of Dylan's own Basement Tapes, finally makes its official appearance 32 years after the event, and nearly 30 years after it started circulating in the underground. Although often identified as a Royal Albert Hall show, this 17th May 1966, concert, in which Dylan played electric material in front of a British audience, was actually recorded in Manchester. Hence the unwieldy title with quotes around “ROYAL ALBERT HALL”. Even those who've owned this recording for many a year might be tempted by this official package, as it has been expanded into a two-CD set that not only includes the eight electric rock songs from the original bootleg, but also the seven solo acoustic performances that comprised the first half of the show. More importantly, the electric half in particular is an important document of rock history. It captures the point at which Dylan was at his most controversial and hard rocking as he blazes through mid-'60s classics such as "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Ballad Of A Thin Man", radical electric arrangements of songs that had originally been recorded acoustically, "One Too Many Mornings" and "I Don't Believe You", and the hard rocker "Tell Me, Momma", which Dylan never recorded in the studio. The acoustic disc is not as epochal, but on par with the electric half in the quality of material and performance. On top of everything else there's a 56-page book with a fine essay by Dylan's friend a notable folk musician in his own right Tony Glover. It's not just an interesting adjunct to Dylan's '60s discography, but it's as worthy of attention as anything else he recorded during that decade.
