Bob Dylan- TIME OUT OF MIND- CD- 1997- Sony Music Entertainment Inc.- 5099748693624- 400 grn
TIME OUT OF MIND is the thirtieth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 30th September 1997, through Columbia Records. The album marked Dylan's artistic comeback. He had not released any original material since Under The Red Sky in 1990. TIME OUT OF MIND is hailed as one of Dylan's best albums, and it went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year in 1998. After spending much of the '90s touring and simply not writing songs, Bob Dylan returned in 1997 with TIME OUT OF MIND, his first collection of new material in seven years. Where Under The Red Sky, his last collection of original compositions, had a casual, tossed-off feel, TIME OUT OF MIND is carefully considered, from the densely detailed songs to the dark, atmospheric production. Sonically, the album is reminiscent of Oh Mercy, but TIME OUT OF MIND has a grittier foundation. By and large, the songs are bitter and resigned, and Dylan gives them appropriately anguished performances. They bathes in hazy, ominous sounds, which may suit the spirit of the lyrics, but are often in opposition to Dylan's performances. It's a better, more affecting record than Oh Mercy, not only because the songs have a stronger emotional pull, but because hasn't sanded away all the grit. As a result, the songs retain their power, leaving TIME OUT OF MIND as one of the rare latter-day Dylan albums that meets his high standards.

How meaningful must an album be to resurrect and redefine a career as big as Bob Dylan's? How well-crafted must it be to best Paul McCartney, Babyface and Radiohead for the Album Of The Year GRAMMY, spawn hits for Garth Brooks and Adele in the decade to come, and set the sonic bar for modern classics? TIME OUT OF MIND accomplished all of this. The mere concept of a new Dylan album had become akin to the old paradoxical riddle: Could God create a stone so heavy that he cannot lift it? Yet Dylan painted a masterpiece with TIME OUT OF MIND, an astonishing feat considering how much darkness found its way into this shining moment in his career, how much magic came out in moments of chaotic mishap. All the while the man himself continued his "Never Ending Tour", perpetually placing him in front of audiences, yet became increasingly fickle as perceived heyday distanced. Even with an album like TIME OUT OF MIND in the can, Dylan seemed unsatisfied, and the album's fate was uncertain. Fortunately, TIME OUT OF MIND was released in 1997. That the world was ready enough to shower it with critical praise and accolades is a testament to Dylan's dexterity for handling even the most cynical and broken of his emotions through song. For all of TIME OUT OF MIND's rough edges and dark corners, Dylan lets in enough light to lift these timeless songs from the bottomless despair. Behind every beautiful thing, there's been some kind of pain.
