Bob Dylan- WORLD GONE WRONG- CD- 1993/2008- Sony Music Entertainment Inc.- 074645759029- 400 grn
WORLD GONE WRONG is the twenty-ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 26th October 1993, by Columbia Records. It was Dylan's second consecutive collection of only traditional folk songs, performed acoustically with guitar and harmonica. The songs tend to deal with darker and more tragic themes than the previous outing, Good As I Been To You. The album received generally positive reviews and won a Grammy award for Best Traditional Folk Album. The album cover is a photograph of Dylan wearing a top hat, seated at a table at Flukes Cradle Cafe bar in Camden Town, London. Hanging on the wall behind Dylan is a painting, "L'Etranger" by artist Peter Gallagher. If Good As I Been To You was a strong traditionalist folk record, WORLD GONE WRONG was an exceptional one, boasting an exceptional set of songs given performances so fully realized that they seemed like modern protest songs. Much of this record is fairly obscure to anyone outside of dedicated folk fans. "Delia", covered by Johnny Cash the following year, and "Stack-A-Lee" are the most familiar items, yet they're given traditional readings, meaning that the latter doesn't quite seem like "Stagger Lee". But even if these are traditionalist, they're spirited and lively renditions, and Dylan seems more connected to the music than he has in years. That sense of connection, plus the terrific choice of songs, makes this one of his best, strongest albums of the second half of his career.

Does anyone buy Dylan albums to hear him sing other people's songs? Despite all that, this one goes back all the way to the first Dylan album in style. Just Dylan with guitar and harp playing old blues and folk tracks. Pretty enjoyable really. The second of Bob Dylan's nineties folk albums, WORLD GONE WRONG follows in the same mold as 1992's Good As I Been To You, as it features just Dylan's voice, guitar, and harmonica — and was recorded entirely in his home studio in a quick, no-frills fashion. Where WORLD GONE WRONG sets itself apart from its predecessor is in song selection. The material here is generally darker, and the more mournful quality of these songs proves to be a better fit for Dylan's noticeably aged voice. He lends a gravity to these ten tracks. It's another haunting album from Bob. Not a lot to say here, it's a decent record with some very dark and melancholic lyrics. Creates an entrancing, late-night, laid back feel, that’s also somehow chilling, sad, and menacing. The selection of covers here suit Dylan well and run deep with texture and unique interpretation — just him and his guitar, doing what they do best. Bob Dylan marks end of a specific era with return to acoustic blues charms. There is the case to be made for World Gone Wrong as one of the most introspective and reflective pieces from Dylan’s discography. WORLD GONE WRONG is not just a great album, it is also the last of a consistent period. Five years after the release of this piece, Dylan released Time Out Of Mind. Four years after that came Love And Theft. As essential as it is touching, WORLD GONE WRONG is another quiet piece of Dylan’s discography that settles well into its charms.
