BEFORE THE FLOOD is a live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and The Band, released on 20th June 1974, on Asylum Records in the United States and Island Records in the United Kingdom. It was Dylan's first live album, although live recordings of earlier performances would later be released. It is the fifteenth album by Dylan and the seventh by the Band, and documents their joint 1974 American tour. It has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Bob Dylan and the Band both needed the celebrated reunion tour of 1974, since Dylan's fortunes had been floundering since Self Portrait and The Band stumbled with 1971's Cahoots. The tour, with its attendant publicity, definitely returned both artists to center stage, and it definitely succeeded, breaking box office records and earning great reviews. BEFORE THE FLOOD, a double-album souvenir of the tour, suggests that these were generally dynamic shows. That's what gives this music such kick - Dylan reworks, rearranges, reinterprets these songs in ways that are still disarming, years after its initial release. He could only have performed interpretations this radical with a group as sympathetic, knowing of his traits as the band, whose own recordings here are respites from the storm. And this is a storm - the sound of a great rocker, surprising his band and audience by tearing through his greatest songs in a manner that might not be comforting, but it guarantees it to be one of the best live albums of its time. Ever, maybe.

So, there are great live albums and superfluous live albums, and then there are live albums that don't seem to be any better or worse than the artist's studio output. Which leads us to BEFORE THE FLOOD. This really isn't a bad Bob live album. He must've been pretty pissed off in this year of Watergate and other such Indigenous American Berserk Bullshit to pull out this forceful a vocal performance. Bob Dylan and The Band were often found in fine form with one another – and this live record should be no surprise to those who listened in. But those who found themselves tapping their foot to these collaborative styles and wildcard instrumentals may be surprised by the sheer quality and class which spreads across BEFORE THE FLOOD. Through a sense of capturing the real feel of live work. BEFORE THE FLOOD may be a drag at times but the waste-no-time style and the throaty, gruff tones from Dylan is a stunning experience. Utterly astounding, an ascension of quality nobody could quite predict – but The Band and their overlapping sound, the electronic pops and whining elements are sharp, exciting and unique. With a run of hits to close this one out, perfect acoustic numbers without too much stray from their studio reflections bar a lyrical turn from Dylan with a bit of venom in his throat, BEFORE THE FLOOD has an incredible status. Certainly, one of the best live offerings available to fans of The Band and Dylan. Moments of real perfection and keen understanding of the live process, the back and forth of Dylan and the wilder side of The Band flowing through and creating a masterful piece in parts.
