NEW MORNING is the eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 21st October 1970 by Columbia Records. Coming only four months after the controversial Self Portrait, the more concise and immediate NEW MORNING received a much warmer reception from fans and critics. Most welcome was the return of Dylan's familiar, nasal singing voice. In retrospect, the album still considered a major improvement over its predecessor. It quickly going Gold. The album's most successful song from a commercial perspective is "If Not For You", which also was recorded by George Harrison. Dylan rushed out NEW MORNING in the wake of the commercial and critical disaster Self Portrait, and the difference between the two albums suggests that its legendary failed predecessor was intentionally flawed. NEW MORNING expands on the laid-back country-rock of John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline by adding a more pronounced rock 'n' roll edge. While there are only a couple of genuine classics on the record, the overall quality is quite high, and many of the songs explore idiosyncratic routes, whether it's the jazzy experiments of "Sign On The Window" and "Winterlude", the rambling spoken word piece "If Dogs Run Free" or the Elvis parable "Went To See The Gypsy". Such offbeat songs make NEW MORNING a charming record.

What does the voice of a generation do when it gets tired of spewing bile for everyone else’s sake? It goes on holiday and soaks in the beauty of introspective spiritualism for a while. As Bob Dylan howls on the title track, “So happy just to be alive underneath the sky of blue,” he is delivering the mantra of NEW MORNING - his second chapter. Dylan gives away his peace in a bellow of sonic bliss and asks for nothing in return. However, sustaining bliss ain’t easy—just take a look at the suddenly saddened faces in a holiday departures lounge. Dylan elucidates this point with one of the greatest opening lines in music history in the beauteous song ‘'Sign On The Window'’: “Sign on the window says ‘Lonely’ / Sign on the door said ‘No Company Allowed’…” This disjunction holds a hell of a lot of universality for all of us. As a result, the song winds up being a touching lament about the tricky business of living rather than the moans of a weary star. Dylan might have disavowed politics here in search of something sunnier, but he hasn’t abandoned the truth. Get away from it all and take some time just to be calm and happy - even if it’s just ‘'looking out your backdoor'’ as Credence Clearwater Revival sang. In NEW MORNING, this simple and beautiful message soars to triumphant heights. Finding himself invigorated in this new realm, Bob Dylan even has time to punctuate the epic romance of the ‘'The Man In Me'’ with a “la la la” chorus, touching on a truth only noticed in the moment you hear them. It’s the sort of mindless exultation that music is all about. Backed by a band who send these songs to strange places with a welter of textures, NEW MORNING has a gorgeous sense of power. And Dylan’s deliverance from the weight of the world at large is as meaningful and pretty as anything he’s ever done providing us sinners with sweet, sweet, musical salvation.
