BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME (known as Subterranean Homesick Blues in some European countries) is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 22nd March 1965 by Columbia Records. In a major transition from his earlier sound, it was Dylan's first album to incorporate electric instrumentation, which caused controversy and divided many in the contemporary folk scene. The album is split into two distinct halves. The first half of the album features electric instrumentation, in which on side one of the original LP, Dylan is backed by an electric rock and roll band. The second half features mainly acoustic songs. The album abandons the protest music of Dylan's previous records in favor of more surreal, complex lyrics. The first track, "Subterranean Homesick Blues", became Dylan's first single to chart in the US. BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME has been described as one of the greatest albums of all time by multiple publications. In 2003, it was ranked number 31 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". This is Dylan at his absolute peak. This album shines because it's the sound of that rare artist who perfectly captures the zeitgeist and translates it into meaningful music. The mood here is happy, lighthearted and fun. Dylan's singing is also at its absolute peak - his expressiveness is amazing. The lyrics are dreamlike but meaningful. They're pretty funny and enjoyable. Overall, an inconsistent album. Maybe it's a fantasy, but it's one Dylan creates very effectively. Oh, and the whole "Dylan goes electric" scandal that happened around the time of this release - you'll never get any sense of that listening to this music. The electric guitar is very muted here and the whole album has a strong acoustic feel to it.

With Another Side Of Bob Dylan, Dylan had begun pushing past folk, and with BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME, he exploded the boundaries, producing an album of boundless imagination and skill. And it's not just that he went electric. It's that he's exploding with imagination throughout the record. And this isn't just introspection, either, since the surreal paranoia on "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" and the whimsical poetry of "Mr. Tambourine Man" are individual, yet not personal. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, really, as he writes uncommonly beautiful love songs, that sit alongside uncommonly funny fantasias. This is the point where Dylan eclipses any conventional sense of folk and rewrites the rules of rock, making it safe for personal expression and poetry, not only making words mean as much as the music, but making the music an extension of the words. The fact is, Dylan said everything that could possibly said. pretty much in one album if not in one song: ''It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)''. After that song was recorded no real counter-culture could exist. Hence why so many people believe Western Civilization is over. This was the shot heard 'round the folkie world. Dylan's throws away any notion of protest singing, and in its place now was vivid lucid and ambiguous poetry. But the tour de force cut is "It's All Right, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)", a prophecying apocalyptic romance, a dirge and condemnation, a curse and a haunt, all rolled into one. He managed to do this while The Beatles were still singing "Yesterday". A truly remarkable album.
