ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN is the fourth studio album by American singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 8th August 1964, by Columbia Records. The album deviates from the more socially conscious style which Dylan had developed with his previous album, The Times They Are A-Changin'. The change prompted criticism from some influential figures in the folk community. Despite the album's thematic shift, Dylan performed the entirety of ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN as he had previous records – solo. In addition to his usual acoustic guitar and harmonica, Dylan provides piano on one track, "Black Crow Blues". ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN it eventually went Gold. Because of this, ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN is a more varied record and it's more successful, too, since it captures Dylan expanding his music, turning in imaginative, poetic performances on love songs and protest tunes alike. This has an equal number of classics to its predecessor, actually, with "All I Really Want To Do", "Chimes Of Freedom", "My Back Pages", "I Don't' Believe You" and "It Ain't Me Babe" standing among his standards, but the key to the record's success is the album tracks, which are graceful, poetic, and layered. Both the lyrics and music have gotten deeper and Dylan's trying more things -- this, in its construction and attitude, is hardly strictly folk, as it encompasses far more than that. The result is one of his very best records, a lovely intimate affair.

Isn't a transitional album supposed to be worse than the artist's other releases? Or at least its immediate predecessor? Because not only does ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN steer its maker away from the topical and towards the abstract, it actually outstrips everything Zimmerman had released thus far. First and foremost, this LP stands as a stark rebuttal of his past life as protest hero. Even beyond "My Back Pages"' brilliant, iconic chorus twist, "All I Really Want To Do"'s silly grin serves as potent antidote to prior seriousness. The closest he gets to January's frame of mind is with "Chimes Of Freedom". Dylan casts his lot with the underdogs and outcasts as before, but the symbolic, natural imagery signals that this is no sociopolitical screed. It's much more moving than the anthems of yore. What got Bob in the most trouble with the folk world, though, was his sudden embrace of the personal and introspective. As for the offending songs, well, they're not all gems. "Spanish Harlem Incident" is inconsequential, "Black Crow Blues" even more so, and "Ballad In Plain D" is eight minutes of self-pitying bloat. Take those three out and you'd have a truly great album. That said, there are plenty of dazzling works here, from "I Don't Believe You"'s snappy hooks to "Motorpsycho Nitemare"'s on-the-fly yarn-spinning. And "To Ramona" might be one of Bob's most touching songs ever - a tender consolation wrapped in a graceful melody and caring delivery. So while his former teammates cry for the old days, you'll be here awaiting the next step forward. But of course, it's a bit easier when you know the story's end, isn't it?
