Bob Dylan- HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN- 2CD- 1962/2013- IMC Music Ltd.- 8712177024636- 500 grn
This vinyl-only release was recorded November 20 and 22, 1961 in New York City. Produced by John Hammond, these recordings feature a young Bob Dylan on vocals, guitar, and harmonica. This CDs contains a fine sampling of Dylan's early recordings and gives an insight into the young man as star in ascendance. Early Dylan isn't as good as his later, mid-60s work. But it's Dylan, so it's good, though the recording quality sometimes leaves something to be desired. BOB DYLAN is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 19th March 1962 by Columbia Records. The album was produced by Columbia talent scout John H. Hammond, who had earlier signed Dylan to the label. The album primarily features folk standards but also includes two original compositions, "Talkin' New York" and "Song To Woody". The latter was an ode to Woody Guthrie, a significant influence in Dylan's early career. The album did not receive much attention at first, but it achieved some popularity following the growth of Dylan's career, charting in the UK three years after its release.

Bob's first album gets overlooked a bit for the most part because most of the songs are other peoples. That however should not let that stop you from checking out young Dylan in action, and regardless of the material this is really very good. Most of the record consists of covers of old folk and blues material. There are only two originals, although those are wonderful. The first thing to say is that Bob is already a gifted singer with a skill for inhabiting the words of a song. Listen to the way he bites down on "In My Time Of Dyin'", or the playfulness of his "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down". We should also point out his always underrated acoustic guitar playing. He's not Dave Van Ronk, but he really does sparkle on "Man Of Constant Sorrow" and "House Of The Risin' Sun". There are a couple of misfires caused by inexperience. Dylan is simply over-the-top on "You're No Good" and "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean", yelping the lyrics when he should be singing and pushing the music too far ahead. Hardly the greatest debut ever, but a harbinger of things to come, certainly. Hyperventilating harmonica, mangled vocals and stabs at guitar virtuosity are worn like a fake beard as any threats of novelty, honesty or personality are jettisoned in favour of the craving to be authentic. Really incredible start to Dylan's Discography. You can really see the future that he had ahead of him. Even though most of this album is covers, he still flips the song into a way that makes them seem like they could be originals. The originals also are amazing and how amazing his writing was, even from the beginning. It isn't like incredible, but you can really tell that he has a lot to say and far to go.
