COMPLETE BLUES Series.
Bob Dylan’s shadow casts itself far and wide over the landscape of contemporary songwriting and culture. Indeed, given his long and continuing musical contributions – the ups and downs, twists and turns of genre encompassing rock, blues, country, gospel, rockabilly, jazz and more – the resonance of those early folk albums can occasionally be overlooked. The protest anthems and melancholy love lyrics that originally launched Dylan toward iconic status are such an embedded beginning point for all his subsequent evolutions, they risk becoming taken-for-granted nostalgia objects rather than rich, living and enduringly relevant songs. Bob Dylan is an icon of popular American culture who transformed the folk music world in the 1960's. What many pop fans didn't realize was that he drew heavily from artists of over 4 decades of Blues and popular music. This collection brings together the original versions of songs that he either recorded or songs that greatly influenced him. This CD contains twenty blues songs, mostly from the 30's, that are known to have influenced Bob Dylan and in many cases were covered by him. It's a great collection of songs, and has whetted your appetite for a deeper exploration of blues music. Included are the originals of several songs covered on Dylan's first album: Bukka White's "Fixin' To Die", Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean'' and Blind Willie Johnson's "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dyin' Bed". Led Zeppelin's "In My Time Of Dyin'" is kindof a cover of this. The good-humoured nonsense of The Basement Tapes is also prefigured by songs here such as "Railroad Bill" by Will Bennett or "Step It Up And Go" by Blind Boy Fuller and the stark parables of John Wesley Harding show Dylan's acquaintance with songs like "Stack O'Lee" by Mississippi John Hurt. There's also a song by Blind Willie McTell allowing us to test the truth of Dylan's assertion regarding his singing. Other songs can't discern any similarity to Dylan's writing, but you'll found all enjoyable, particularly "Po' Boy" by Bukka White. Bob Dylan, along with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, completely revolutionised music in the 1960's ushering in a new era of artistic expression that has paved the way for everything that has followed in Pop and Rock music. Dylan not only represented the future of music in the Sixties but was also a standard bearer for all of the great American musical genres that had preceded his arrival on the scene. Throughout his career Dylan has taken various elements of Folk, Country, Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Bluegrass, Western Swing, Rockabilly, Pop and just about anything else he has heard and forged them together into his own unique style. On this release you track down the artists and songs that were to play such an important part in Dylan's career. Unlike many of these type of CDs, this can be enjoyed from start to finish and these songs stand easily on their own merits, not just of interest to Bob Dylan fans. While listening to these originals, it becomes obvious that Dylan didn't change much, wisely capturing the honest grittiness found on this set. Whether a fan of Dylan or the original blues masters, this is a recommended compilation that will more than satisfy both.
