Ace Frehley- ORIGINS VOL.1- CD- 2016- Entertainment One U.S./Steamhammer/SPV GmbH- 886922698507- 400 grn
ORIGINS VOL. 1 is the fifth studio album by American guitarist Ace Frehley, released on 13th April 2016 in Japan and 15th April in the United States. It is a covers album which features guest appearances from Slash, Lita Ford, John 5, Mike McCready, and Frehley's former Kiss bandmate Paul Stanley. Coming 15 years after he played his last show with Kiss, ORIGINS VOL.1 is Ace Frehley's first "all covers" album, but that's not entirely accurate, as some of these songs are rightfully his. Take the Kiss song "Cold Gin," which was delivered by the noted abstainer Gene Simmons although written by the then partyman but now sober Ace. His version here is the proper combination of weathered and liquor store aware, while his spotlight Kiss number "Parasite" is absolutely thunderous in this modern recording. Paul Stanley's spirited appearance on Free's "Fire And Water" proves there are no sour grapes between the Spaceman and the Starman as Ace responds with one of his greasiest guitar solos. The guest list smells of high-quality leather, well-worn denim, and a killer jam happening down at the roadhouse. Great, fun, and effortless stuff plus one of the best Kiss-related releases in years, even if it doesn't come from the mothership.

From Ace Frehley’s first solo record until 2016, 38 years have passed and nothing has remained the same in the magic world of rock ‘n roll… Everything has changed, except for the love and respect of the entire Kiss Army towards Space Ace. His return is marked with a compilation of covers and should be treated as a celebration release. Frehley has returned to Earth orbit a lot sooner than usual with a new record entitled ORIGINS VOL. 1. It pays tribute to Hendrix and the other legendary artists who inspired him to begin his own musical journey with powerful, energetic covers of songs like Jimi’s “Spanish Castle Magic” and Led Zeppelin’s “Bring It On Home.” The cover of ORIGINS VOL. 1 a fitting tribute to the place where Frehley’s incredible life story began. Ace quickly realized that music, not school or running with the “greaser gangs” in his neighborhood, would be his ticket to a better life. Elsewhere on ORIGINS VOL. 1, Ace reclaims “Cold Gin” and “Parasite” from the Kiss catalog by singing the lead vocals on both for the first time ever. Having his notorious friends serving as allies, Ace creates a decent album, which despite the good song selections has the disadvantage of the included covers to be compared to the versions of the original performances, which (the latter) seem to be way better than the covers. Excellent choice and performance in “Bring It On Home” of Zeppelin. The album closes ideally with “Rock And Roll Hell” of Bachman -Turner Overdrive… No guys, it’s not a Kiss song even though you learned it from Creatures Of The Night in a much better performance… what an album!
